Default chevy 10 bolt front axle!

i have a friend with a 79 3/4 chevy drivetrain welded the front 10 bolt together and yea it broke the shafts. so i got him a axle from a 87 3/4 sub its a 10 bolt but the ujoint for a 79 is way bigger than a 87 will the carrier and shafts still work?? i was told about a cut off in 85 or 86 ish.. trying to get together before the 23rd anything would help parts or info!!!

Are you sure your buddy's busted axle is a 10-bolt? I thought 1979 was the last year for the D44 front?

when we ordered the 5:13 gears thats what they told us it was a corp. 8.5

they are the people that seen the axle and sold us the gears that where installed and worked great until it was taken back apart. thats when the welding tookpart, the rest was history when it got put in 4wd

I know the axle i gave ya uses 0297 series joints, cause that what i used in the stubs.

Are we talking about wheel u-joints, or the pinion u-joint.

Something isn't making sense. You sure it's a different size? no chance it is either a 60, or out of a non-GM vehicle? Dodge possibly?

the wheel joint from the 79 is bigger than the wheel joint for the 87. so if i was to get stub shafts for the 87 and run the small wheel joint will the splines be the same for his lock outs or will i have to get hubs too???

You've got somthing wrong, some where. Dana 44 and 10 bolts have use the same joint since '73 in chevys at least. The newer spicer part # 760 somthing. If what you have is the different then what was in it, find another shaft.
