Any members on here? I'm going to be at the Winter Beer Festival next weekend, my first, and just wondered if anyone on the inside, or those that have attended their other events, could give me the lowdown on what to expect. What does my ticket get me? Are there any snobby breweries (Bell's) who don't attend? I'm excited as the last festival I attended was the "World Beer Expo" in Frankenmuth in '03 and that was kind of lame. The website has little info. that I could find. I know that I read of one other member going, but I'm sure there's more. TIA

I went a few years back - awesome selection of beer but one problem is the people. There are too freaking many that go there. It wasn't too bad at first, and I even bumped into people I hadn't seen in years, but it got worse.

Take a 200' long tent, place porta-johns at the far end...if you were anywhere else but next to the toilets, taking a piss became a 15 minute event. I don't know about you, but I went there to DRINK, and after I broke the seal - peeing became a priority.

Problem was, the beer I liked was on the opposite end of the tent.

Here's the tent 30 minutes after opening - this was "empty" compared to a few hours after.

So can you buy beer to go from the vendors as in cases or sixpacks?

I don't think so. There were only kegs and they served you in little plastic cups - you were not allowed to take any alcohol outside the area.

We booked a hotel and did a taxi to and fro. Worth the extra money, IMHO.

From what I've read this looks to be a lot more spread out. It's at the freakin' baseball park!! I bought tix. last week and I think we were in the 2700 range. As long as Dragonmead is there with their tripel I'll be a happy guy. BTW, if anyone still needs tickets, the couple that we had planned on going with backed out so I have two that I would like to sell. Shouldn't be hard the day of though, as the price goes up $5 each at the box office.

I'm going, friends with a guy that works at Big Rock in Birmingham, we go anyway. lot of complaints about it being outside in the winter, but you can't complain if you don't go, it could be good. You usually get a cup with 10 tokens, each token gets you a "taste" usually by your 6-7th, your pretty "toasty" You can buy more tokens too. Best is to get there early cause it packs up later in the day. Mich Brewers guild members get in an hour earlier too. It's "different" a good time, mostly find new breweries in Mich with good beers you want to take trips to later on.

Started a post here but not much response.

Like the av hemi, but the beer looks a bit dark for me. Hophead myself, the cascade vine growing up the garage every summer proves it. The sad thing is I haven't brewed a batch since I planted it. I just smash the bracts between my fingers every September and enjoy the aroma. Still have my stuff, just haven't found the time to brew. I'm looking forward to the event and finding some good IPAs and Belgians. Have any suggestions?

IPA's and Belgians is summer fest:tonka: not winter, you should be able to find something to suit your tastes

I like IPA's, Arcadia is good stuff, brewing my first batch went a little dark so it might hide some problems if there were any

I know that summer is Belgian season, but hopefully there'll be some hearty IPAs there for me. And Arcadia, I've sampled their stuff and really don't like the British style. I can drink their Scotch, but the rest leave me wanting. The big west coast IPAs and Dragonmead's tripel do it for me. Do you know if Dragonmead will be there?? I really crave Final Absolution!

Very good time despite the crowd. Talked in the bathroom line with one of the Brewer's from Big Rock. He seemed to be in pain . Their farm ale was interesting, but the big hefe hit the spot for me (i was the only in our group that liked it though). Lot's of awesome big beers. Rochester Mills' Double Dry Hopped IPA and Barleywine were tasty, as was the Double Crooked Tree from the local brewery, Dark Horse. I don't know why becasue I'm not a jalapeneo fan, but Arcadia's Ring of Fire was very good and a must-try as a change of pace for any "real" beer drinker.

A big dissapointment came today when I stopped to pick up the ingredients for my "comeback" batch of homebrew at Siscliano's (sp) party store on Lk. MI drive. They were completely out of Cascade and Centenial hops, which are a must have for any american pale ale. Hopefully the Amarillo I'm going to try for the first time is a suitable replacement. At least they had the one beer I wanted to try at the festival that was out by the time I got to Dragonmead's tent.
