Is this dumb beotch for real? (article in the free press)

So Ford has a new feature out, called Sync... for hands-free cell use, hands free radio (all voice or blue tooth enabled) etc.

This bitch writes for the free press, and says the SYNC system is unsafe because drives will now be worried about the music they listen too...

Quote:
Sync's focus on fun, not safety
The Detroit News 02/13/08
by Ann Job

Ford' Motor Co.'s television ad showing off the Sync system in the Focus sedan is so well done, I doubt many viewers bother with the on-screen warning that says they shouldn't drive while distracted.

But, of course, throughout commercial, the young driver of the Focus is exactly that -- distracted.

You know the ad. It shows a reddish-brown-haired guy behind the wheel, with his friend in the front passenger seat.

As they travel, the two compete to select which musical artists' songs will be played inside the car, using Sync's verbal commands to the audio system.

At one point, the driver is visibly embarrassed when his friend discovers that among the hard-core musical selections are Michael Bolton and his less-than-manly "How Can I Live Without You."

Of course, we all chuckle.

Convenience more important

But wait a minute.

We should be thankful that there are no other cars on the road, because between the glances over to his friend and his mind occupied by which musical artists would be appropriate to play, the driver is clearly not paying attention to the road.

Perhaps this is why Microsoft Corp. officials last year unveiled Sync emphasizing it's a convenience feature, not necessarily a safety feature, for cars.

In fact, when I pressed them on why big, wealthy Microsoft doesn't spend just a bit of its money on a research study that would track how Focus drivers with Sync fare in crashes and whether the system reduces distractions, I was met with amazed looks.

To me, it's a natural opportunity. With the Focus being the first of many vehicles to get Sync and with the 2008 model targeted at young drivers, it could serve wonderfully as a test case.

Microsoft's people basically responded that this kind of study should be done by the federal government.

But to expect a government that's in debt to its eyeballs to spend money to study something Microsoft created and is peddling as a money-making product is crazy, given that Microsoft could do all of us drivers a big favor by studying Sync's impact on roadway crashes all by itself.

Ford officials didn't indicate they'd oppose such a study. Still, I don't expect them to step up because the automaker remains so financially strapped.

Microsoft has money for study

But Microsoft recently announced it has lots of money and is willing to spend more than $44 billion to buy Internet portal Yahoo.

Can't it find a few bucks to answer the pressing question of whether American drivers using hands-free devices really are safer on the roads than drivers who don't have the newfangled technology?

Maybe if Microsoft won't do it, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation could fund such a study.

After all, the foundation's mission includes "bringing innovations in health" to people.
I've never written into a newspaper, but I think I might tonight... If this was Nissans new feature she would be all over it.

Um, the on screen warning is for the satnav system itself and not Sync as a whole. It's a legal disclaimer.

Well I work with computers for a living and the last thing I want is Microsoft controling anything in my car. I agree the blue tooth is cool and may lead to less distraction Complicated Nav/Sound system suck and Microsoft is soooo famous for making things simple. And another thing, If I were designing the system, cell phones wouldn't work in cars traveling over 35mph. I've seen more cars/people destroyed because people were jabbering than I care to mention.

Then you aren't allowed to have an opinion on vehicle design.

what happens when the sync program crashes like every other microsoft program and the driver shuts off his car and tries to restart it while doing 75 on the highway?

Funny that this topic came up... I test drove a 2008 Focus just this morning with the sync system in it and I got to check out all of the features. I am REALLY impressed, much more so than I thought I would be. I had my ipod plugged into the little cable thing (technical term: dongle/ "interface cable") and found that I could search through my music just like in the commercial. I hit the button, the little annoying chime thing plays, and without taking my eyes off the road, I could say "Play Metallica" and it did just that. No picking up the ipod and using one hand to cycle through my songs... nothing of that sort.

The guy with me on the test drive had a bluetooth phone, so we tried that out as well. "Call Mike" and it called Mike. Meanwhile, I didn't have to take my hands off the wheel, or my eyes off the road.

This woman really needs to stop being a sensationalist bitch and actually use that vacuum of a cranial space she's got inside that thick skull. I'd bet 2 of my 3 working testicles that if the car had been a Toyota using some sort of Mac "iSync" setup, she would have been strattling the shift knob and sucking on the turn signal lever to remind her of her college days. Personal attacks aside, is anyone going to write to her? I'd really hate to have to send her my opinion.

Um, you're assuming sync has any control over vehicle mechanical functions. Which it doesn't. It's purely an entertainment suite.
