Default MP3 players

in the market for a used MP3 player, and i am curious about file formats. if i'm not mistaken, you have to convert mp3's into some other format for iPod, correct? what about the other players on the market.. zune, etc; do they require changing?

fwiw, i don't need video capability, i just want all my music in one spot, not falling out of my visors on the dunes.

Bought my girlfriend a refurbushed 30gb ipod for christmas for like $200 and she hasn't had any issues. Came wrapped in a normal looking box and the ipod looked flawless.

iPods play mp3s, no reason to convert anything before you put it on there.

You are incorrect, pretty much every music player out there supports mp3 format, including iPod. iPods do not support WMA (Windows Media Audio) format. iTunes uses AAC format by default, the AAC files you purchase from them have DRM on them, which makes them generally unplayable on devices other than the iPod or iTunes.

So if you intend to purchase music from the iTunes store, and be able to play on devices other than your iPod, it's not the right device for you. But if you just plan on using an iPod, encoding your own MP3s from CD, or downloading MP3s from the internet, iPod is a suitable device.

as a side note, the AAC DRM scheme has been broken, and there are ways to strip the DRM, and re-encode to MP3 format, if you ever really want to "free" music you've purchased for use on other players.

Technically, you do have to use iTunes to upload to it. There are some alternative applications you may use to upload to some iPod devices, but depending on the iPod firmware version and type of iPod (i.e. Touch, iPhone, newer model minis, etc...) you may not be able to use these other applications. I haven't checked in a while, someone may have overcome the limitations that Apple put on writing to their iPod database when the iPhone came out.

I am VERY happy with my 4gb expandable Insignia player from Best Buy. Does video, pictures, FM radio, records FM radio, mic in for recording lectures, has Bluetooth for wireless headphones, easy to use, all kinds of goodies. It was like $125.

X2 on woot.

I got my MP3 player (a SanDisk Sansa) and my son's (also a SanDisk) from woot.

I like the SanDisk MP3s as they use Windows Explorer or MS Media Player - no iTunes or other proprietary software.

Its cheap because its not very large in todays standards and because its a refurb. For 14 bucks delivered you can't go wrong if you start there. It should have quirks the same as any player, then you will know what you do or don't like. You may find the size suits you well enough. Either way. Go that route to start and see from there.

Which is why I-Pods suck. Converting files from wma's to a compatible format is a pain in the ass - why cant they just accept god damn wma's?

X2 on any san-disk product....I have a sansa (and though much smaller than you need) for the gym - it's been beat to shit and had weights slammed on it, yet still works with no problems. AND, you don't need to download any apple shit to your computer to transfer music to it - the way it should be

i love my zune 30 that i got for 85 bucks on woot.com you have to use the software that comes with it, but that is really for the best when you're dealing with 30 gigs of music, pictures, video, podcasts, etc.

well thats exactly what i'd assume avoid... i use Media Player to play music, i'd just assume plug my plyer and and have it synch, not have to worry about other software and converting.

yep, with an I-pod you have to use I-tunes or some other rip off of that program to put songs on them. Granted most of your songs may not be in wma format, it's still a pain in the ass to convert (especially when you have upwards of 50+gigs) as I-tunes literally takes forever to convert them....when my g/f got a i-pod I had to convert like 200 songs for her - it took close to two days straight.

If you're like me, not the most computer savvy (aka I don't want to search for alternative programs for I-tunes or ways to get around other apple crap) then get something that can drag and drop or sync with windows media player - my sansa has no problem syncing at all.....

Can you not sync with windows media player with a zune?? I'd find that odd on microsofts part if you couldn't, but not totally surprised as they do some stupid shit sometimes

I've got the creative zen vision M. Its a great all around player. You can get them online only, because creative stopped making it. I bought a refurb model and just love it. It plays just about everything and isn't a bad size either.
