all the derby talk got me thinkin

any intrest in a pinewood derby race circuit? kind of westside vs. eastside type thing? winners from west can race winners from the east..for a lame looking trophy that will get sold at a garage sale for 50 cents.

Discuss.

no rules needed.

:tonka:

is AWANA the jerks who cut open my michigan record setting co2 car to find a metal rod in it? :tonka:

My shop teacher in 8th grade didn't think it was funny.

The body was so narrow, it would of course snapped the first time it hit the break wall foam. So my dad and I had to reinforce it.

I went from a record setting run to being DQ. Instead of using a metal detector, they used a pocket knife.

based on your postings in the government/religion forum I'm doubting it was an AWANA sanctioned event that you would have been involved in...

that being said, for the past two years, I've been involved/volunteered/assisted in the Fenton cubscouts pinewood derby (the sole reason my oldest son jake is in scouts is cause he wants to race).

the use of a metal detector is not part of the pre-race inspection at the local council races, nor at districts. simple size check via insertion into a 'spec box' and simple weight test. final check is a visual rolling inspection on a section of track to insure that the cars aren't "3 wheeling" and to verify that the proper BSA wheels/axles are used, and that no illegal chamfering of the wheel hubs has taken place.

the 'open class' that the den leaders get to race in proved somewhat humorous this year. while a typical 'legal' car is in the 4 oz range, one of the den leaders brought in a car weighing over 2lbs :tonka:

the guide rails are not deep enough to keep a Dsized model rocket engine boosted car on the track. (don't ask me how I know)

while no rules would imply that such a car would be legal, one would still need to cross the finish line in order to technically 'win'. :tonka:

This is still legal in AWANA, but no lathe spinning of the tires or axles anymore. (as of last year)

AWANA Derby races, probably is not a good thing to be found cheating in.:tonka:

even if not found cheating by the organizers of the race... why risk getting smited (or is smote the past tense of smite?)

You gotta have rules. At the very least a total weight, front weight, and rear weight max. Otherwise people will have lead bricks flying down the track.

WTF, no lathe spinning? My dad and I always used to sand them as a set with 300 grit paper. Hope that's still legal.

We use to stick the tires in the Freezer, to get them as hard as we could, then true them up on the Lathe......................AWANA rules don't allow this anymore, but maybe the Cub Scout rules still allow it.
