Default Vacation in Kauai Last Week

My wife had enough points through her business travels to rent a Hummer H2 while we were in Kauai last week. I talked to some locals about 2-tracks into the interior of the island and they told me how to get out to the area where Jurassic Park was filmed. My wife complained the entire time that we were going to get stuck, but me and the kids had a good time. It had been raining up in the mountains so the water was a little high.

Nothing illegal about wheelin there. Those are roads and I followed a pair of
15 passenger 1 ton 4x4 vans on 35s with winches that belong to the Movie Tour group there in Kauai. They run 2 groups a day up and down those roads to tourists for a $140 4 hour tour of the interior of the island. The roads are all on maps and the river is supposed to flow over them. It just happened that they had a lot of rain in the mountains last week and the flow was a little stronger than usual.

On this board I can never tell who's joking and who's serious. If you get a chance to go out there definately rent a 4x4. I would have prefered a Jeep, but they didn't have any available and am actually glad I didn't have a Jeep. On Sunday we checked out of the room and headed up to the north shore in a heavy downpour. I drove over the top of one mud/rock slide and then got flagged down by a guy and his wife. He left his resort to go get some breakfast and the road further north had washed out so he couldn't get to his resort. We left his car there and gave him and his wife a ride. It was a nasty river of mud coming down off the mountain. When I went into it I dipped the front headlights under water at one point and the water was pushing halfway up the doors and splashing over the entire side windows and roof. I think a Jeep would have been too light and probably been pushed down the river, but the H2 took it like a man. You should have seen the faces on the rental place people when I turned that thing in Sunday night.

Been to that island twice. Best one in my opinion.
We rented quads, had a great time. Can't wait to go back.

This was my second time going to Kauai and I doubt if I'll ever stay at another island. I like the small number of people on this island and the less hustle and bustle of the more tourist attracting islands. We also did an ATV adventure through the KIPU Ranch one day and had a great time. The ranch is partly in the rainforest and swamp part of the island and it was really a muddy, fun time. We basically had to throw our clothes away when we were done. That red dirt doesn't wash out well. My wife erased our camera memory card and downloaded all the pics to her computer so now I've got to pull some of the pics off of it if I want to see any of them again.
