Default Crazy thought. ever been done?

anyone ever hear of someone taking a dana 60 rear and making it into a dana 60 front? i'm guessing it wouldn't be that hard, but i wonder if anyones ever done it and was successful.

Why is that crazy? Cut off old tubes, re-tube and weld on outers of your choice no big deal.

It can be done however you have to figure out some sort of axle seal in the pumpkin. Fronts have them to keep the oil out of the tubes and rears use the oil to lube the hub bearings. There was a company making a special seal that fits inside the factory diameter of the tubes to convert it but I'm not sure the name or anything.

What makes a front Dana 60 more expensive is from the inner-Cs out.

Many people that having the D60 knuckles, spindles, C, etcs. make a 609 by using a 9" center section and the D60 knuckle assembly. This saves some weight and can gain under the diff clearance, and with a Hi-9 (no currie, the real hi-9) it can be stronger.

You could get them in a TTB ford...

Exactly, though, as noted above. Sure, you can do it, but as noted, the costs are in the knuckles, hubs, shafts, rotors, etc.

Its more useful when someone is breaking Dana 60 R&Ps, and wanted to go to a 14bolt or Dana 70/80.

so basically it wouldn't be any cheaper then. cuz i have a dana 60 FF rear that i plan on using, but in the event i can't locate a 60 front i thought about making it into a front and getting a chevy 14 bolt for the rear.

You never know. If you find someone selling off used C, knuckles, etc. you might be able to build it for cheap.

Or you can buy aftermarket parts from places like solid or spidertrax and build it that way, but that'll cost a few bucks.

Dana 61 fronts make good outer donors cause not many like messing with them. Steal all the good stuff off of it.

you would still have a low pinion D60, with a lot of time and money into it.

Speedway Motors http://www.speedwaymotors.com/ sells internal seals for 9" axles for their full floater racing kits. I dunno where it is on their web site, but I got their catalog the other day and I saw them in there while flipping through it.

Also Mad4wd makes some internal seals that mount at the end of the axle tube, right at the inner-C.
