The F16 has an engine capable of an 8 to 1 thrust to weight ratio if I remember correctly. It's the most overpowered aircraft ever built I remember one guy at Wright-Patterson telling me.

F-16 is pretty powerful - but I thought the F-15 had a higher power/weight ratio in that it can accelerate to supersonic speeds while flying fully vertical. There's actually an avionics "stick shaker" package on F-15s that warns the pilot when they're going to exceed the capabilities of the airframe (i.e. it's so fast that it can outfly it's ability to stay put together).

It's just that the F-15 is so expensive (and large) that an alternative needed to be found to allow buying enough planes to cycle out the F-4 Phantoms - the F-16.

Ironically, the F-15 was originally intended as a pure air superiority platform ("not a pound for air to ground") while the F-16 was to be the multi-role platform. With the emergence of the F-15E "strike eagle" the F-16 is now the leading air superiority platform - well until the F-22 is fully rolled out...

I was waiting for something cool to happen.

Anyone know the story behind that?

I was imagining the dialog over the radio.

"Hi. I've got an F-16. Look at all the stuff under my wings (exposes underside of aircraft). between this 20mm and these Sidewinders, your ass is mine. So, what's up?"

That's awesome.

I wanted to be a figher pilot so bad when I was younger. Then my vision went to shit.

Ditto.

I was even an "Aviation Explorer Scout" and got to hang out at the local ANG field and de-fog the F-100 windscreens. We did a field trip to Dayton and watched a B-52 wing take off and form up for the trip to Vietnam for an accelerated bombing campaign.

But then I graduated from college into a crippling recession. But then a great, great man named Ronald Reagan decided he was going to end the Cold War once and for all and jobs opened up all across the defense business.

So, since I couldn't fly them, I could build them.

A-10 warthogs take the prize for the most badass flying machine ever.

if you ever get to hear (and feel) the 30mm gun ripping 4,000 rounds per minute in person, you will know why.

I think the F15 is only an edge better on thrust to weight, but it does it with 2 engines as opposed to one.

The A10 is awesome. No bigger gun has ever been fitted to an aircraft.

If they still practice up in Grayling, you should go hear them in person

x3

They turn and jink around like a flying crotch rocket.

I'd love to watch them discharge a little ordnance in Grayling...

but yes, the A10 is one of my all time favorites.

truth, just about any military spec air craft has roll/response rates that typical civvy/commercial aircraft can only dream about.

AC130 Spectre is almost as cool as the A10. It flies in a circle around the target and unloads with howitzer cannons and gatling guns, as seen on the Transformers movie.

I keep forgetting they fitted that fat bastard with a gun not too long ago. I thought I had seen some modern marvels or something on the a10 and how the aircraft designers never wanted to venture towards dealing with such a size difference again. The gun on the a-10 actually slows the plane down tically as well as pitches it up. The front gear is offset because of the ammo configuration needed for the gun.

it's funny you talk to F16 pilots out at SANG and how much respect and pride they have in that thing when it comes to its grace and agility compared to say the F14 or F18. They used F16's as "enemies" when they tested F22's and every time they told the F16 pilots to get really aggressive, they were able a good portion of the time to maneuver in and get in target lock on the F22's. Mind you the F22 pilots were fresh pilots just getting into the program being trained.

Funny, A similar thing happened to a doctor that my uncle works for after they grounded all the planes on 9/11. He was flying his private plane (jet??). He said he turned his head, and there was an f-16 on one side of him, and he looked the other way, and there was another on the other side. they got real close and the pilots pointed toward the ground with their hands. needless to say, he found a place to land...lol
