Computer Guys ? (Linux?)

I was looking at a computer today.

It is a Silicon Graphics Inc. Octane. It's a green/aquamarine color; pretty distinctive.

Anyone know anything about these?

I believe it is a unix operating system, Could I wipe it out and install a windows product on there (IE windows server?)

If not, I take it I could install ubunto on there......would that be able to network with windows based PC's for media storage and stuff?

Edumacate me?

If you try to install windows on it, it will go into destruct mode and catch on fire.

I am pretty sure that you can only load SGIs unix called "IRIX". The newer systems have intel based chips so you could load ubuntu on them. But the Octanes are a couple generations old if I remember right.

EDIT: You may be able to find debian linux that has been ported over for SGI MIPS processors. But I would not expect it to be an easy process.

GOOD LUCK.

yea, not gonna happen.

Romey, you were right, according to wikipedia, at least. They run Irix, dont have any info there about what does and doesn't work on that generation computer as far as OS's are concerned. I thought the computer was newer than it was.

work is throwing it out, and i'm looking for a free PC for media server and backup duty at my house.......just have to wait for one of the IBM's we have here to get pitched.

My first thought to his question was, "Why?" I have been Microsoft-free for ~7 yrs., and never looked back!

If it's free, grab it. You can always fool around with it to see if you can port linux to it.

Or if you don't want it, I'll take it....

You are correct that an Octane runs IRIX. They have a MIPS based CPU, and should be able to run one of the many MIPS geared versions of Linux distribution. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a Ubuntu version, if there is, it's not supported (i.e. no package updates). There are definitely Debian versions, there used to be a RedHat version I think, and many others.

No way in hell will you get a Windows variant on there.

Probably not the best choice for a file server, although you can definitely run Samba on it w/ Linux. The drives it comes with are probably going to be tiny 8G or so SCSI drives.

I'd take one off your hands, just to mess with. You could probably sell em on ebay too.
