Default Stoopit Jeep! (another whiny post)

Feel free to hammer away....

Damn steering getting chunky, checked it out, end of column has a lot of play as do the two u-joints in the steering shaft. Between the water flowing under the rusted out windshield frame and the constant breakdowns (some owner inflicted) I'm starting to tire of this thing....

Since I got it 1 1/2 yrs ago:
Replaced tires and rims (my choice, but tires were bald)
Replaced transmission (bad synchros)
Replaced gearing (blew out rear pinion, replaced both gearsets with 4.88's)
Replaced driveshaft & u-joints (NEVER sidestep clutch on dry pavement)
Replaced seats (Driver's seat broke)
Replaced water pump
Replaced radiator
Replaced transfer case
Replaced throwout bearing
Replaced radio (due to theft)
Replaced hood latches
Replaced brakes (OK, maintenance item)

Still needs:
Windshield frame
Windshield
Fuel sender (I think, gas gauge only drops to 3/4 tank, but drops all the way with ign off)
Springs (only 1" between bump stop and axle up front)
Speakers(zip tied some cheapies under the dash)
Rust repair (not much, but gotta get it done soon)
Fan clutch
Taillights (Got some LED units, the stockers have bulbs zip tied in place)

Hate to bitch like this, but I'm outta ready cash, and this thing is starting to pi$$ me off....just wanted to vent a little...

sounds like a yj. the best thing to do is get rid of all the oem crap. I hated my yj powertrain when it was a 2.5. constant trans problems, $120 for a starter, late 80's crappy tbi system. finally when the tranny went for the second time i parked it, saved some cash and did the sbc swap. hang in there, eventually you'll get to the point where you are ahead of the little BS.

Hey, thanks- oddly enough, the engine's the best thing about this jeep....reliable as gay posts on GL4x4

Of course, a SBC means getting rid of the dana30\35 combo I just had redone...

Honestly, this is something that was said to me when I was having a ridiculous amount of problems with my old XJ.

Well... strangely enough, 3 days later, i got in an accident totaling it.

Regardless though, it may be good advice. Sometimes, it's just not worth fixing everything and just starting over on something with less problems.

To be fair, the axles and transfer case were owner induced....

But, yeah- cut and run sounds better every day

true but i kept my 30/35 combo for 8 years after the sbc swap. it can be done, you just have to be easy on the skinny pedal

i can vouch for jeep2nv about the 370,000 on the clock and since i have known and lived down the road and wheeled with him since 2000ish i know he's not foolin. any way it sounds like bloomule wants to whine about making a 1 1/2 old purchasing mistake when he bought a clearly ragged out abused heep with a couple of tires in the boneyard and is trying to put the last nails in the coffin and blame it on the jeep. hey they are only as good as those who buy'em,build'em,and wheel'em

He used the phrase, "I haven't replaced that much" which is up for interpretation....

Ex: I haven't replaced that much compared to my friend who has replaced every single part!

Not totally true.....

I traded a ragged out and totally abused 68 Harley Sportster for it.
The trans needed synchros in it, but other than that and saggy springs it wasn't too bad of a trade. (I had been riding the Sporty for 13 years and it had a bad oil leak, needed the cases split to repair....) I don't really care about the tires, that's something I usually change anyway....

Just that every time I get the cash together to IMPROVE the beast, something breaks. It's disheartening.

I wish I was independently wealthy like some folks and able to just keep throwing money at it to build the Ultimate Jeep, but in reality all I need is something to haul my snowmobile and occasional two-track runs. My Ramcharger was my wheeling rig back in the 80's, and a buddy with a stock CJ kept going places I couldn't... (I lost count of the mirrors I replaced on that Ram..) This YJ came up and I took it. Right now this YJ would give me everything I need, and the bum title wouldn't matter cuz the leftover would go to the scrapper anyway....

All I need is a couple grand....:chiefwoohaw:

Anyway gotta make another post about the freeze plugs blowing out in my wife's Tracker...not my year for vehicles....
