At first, reading your subject line I was thinking of hijacked domain names, rather than the process described which is to me more akin to that of a shady stereotypical used car salesman on one of those inner city back lots:

"oh... you're looking for a (insert brand)? We just got an offer on one, care to match or put in a higher bid?"

or, I guess the shadiest of real estate agents that do things similar on houses...

what I found humorous is NSI has been doing this for a number of years and people have only now found it out en masse.

That is BS. That is like hijacking a patent helpline or something.

Networks Solutions is the mack daddy of the registrars. Kinda like the government screwing you.

I've used them to do /whois searches, but have never considered using them as a registrar for my domains.

I'm fairly lazy (and cheap) in that regard, and let my domain host handle my domain registration, and historically the big box/big names aren't the most economical for either registering, or hosting.

*Shrug*

The only thing about that, is that NSI is THE handler for all domains. So anyone you use to hold your domain, it is still going through Network Solutions. I figure, cut out the middle man.

cept when the middle man is cheaper by virtue of buying in bulk from the source. tiered marketing/sales ftw/ftl I guess.

my current domain was 'free' when I first registered it with a hosting plan, that at the time was only $7.77 for the entire year's worth of hosting. NSI didn't have anything like that for even the registration :tonka:

some folks have bitched about dreamhost but for my personal/non-commercial needs it offers way more than I intend to utilize it for. *shrug*

NSI is supposed to be impartial as the main manager of all domain lookups though. They are not supposed to act as cybersquatters which is exactly what they're doing.
