Default Radar Questions?

So after a few years of driving a slow jeep I find my self with a couple of daily drivers that have a little more pep. So I was wondering every ones opinion of which radar you think is better. I prefer to spend under 150 at most 250 but if its worth it might go a little higher. Also has anyone ever used any jammers. of any sort?

Thanks BB

I had an old old old radar jammer, it never worked. I currently run an Escort Passport 5000. They're no longer produced, so they can be had on ebay for cheap. I bought mine for $50 as a factory reman. Not bad for a $500 unit. The screen is huge and easy to read, and it has saved my ass on 131 many times.

My dad runs Whistler's from Wally World, and has the worst driving record i've ever seen.

i usually hear about the cops on the CB long before i get near them. To me, if you want to avoid cops, that's the tool to use.

Take it for what it's worth.

The speed limit is 70 most areas. If you need to go faster than that, just commit and run if the police try and stop you..

True, a Valentine is about as good as you'll ever get, but I seldom find them in your price range. You get what you pay for, they are worth the money.

The escort I had worked great, now I just drive the speed limit most of the time so I don't have one. If I was gonna buy another one I'd buy another escort for sure!

just go the speed limit, is it really necessary to go over 70? on surface streets you don't get anywhere any faster by speeding, except for the red light thats coming up

out here the speed limit is 75 but if you try doing that you will end up not on the road in a lot of places!! But you are exactly right on being the first one to the next red light!

valentine one is consistently the "test winner" over all in the car magazines.

I went considerably cheaper and with the one that usually scores a close 2nd in most categories. - escort passport 8500. I found an online vendor for $250, but if you know someone that works at bestbuy I have heard that the employee purchase price is sub $200.

very few falses, and believe it or not it even blipped on time from a stray laser signal from a combined MSP/County speed trap outside of fowlerville (I had been speeding enough that I would have been motioned over if it had been an actual readable signal targeted at my car)

another neat feature of the hardwire kit, is that you can go "dark mode" on the main radar detector and have a much smaller controller that also has a mute button, and tiny display.

not everyone's surface streets have red lights (e.g. not everyone lives in or commutes near a city)

when one first makes the transition from a slow/lifted/wobbly jeep to a car that actually handles like a car, is relatively smooth and has relatively low road noise it's not unheard of to be surprised at how fast one is travelling on even country 2 laners...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Beltronics detectors yet. I have one of their higher end models (have had two now) and it always works great.... picks it up a long way away, over hills, around corners, etc. Another thing I like about it is that you can turn off the X-band mode, which elimates thousands of false beeps. Most automatic doors run on X-band, but I don't think any police use it anymore.

Detectors are best on a busy road because the cop's radar will be on constantly. I got busted this fall up in Traverse when I was cooking along alone, and he crested a hill and turned on his radar. D'oh. He goes, "you sure slowed down fast." Haha. My car went from 70 to 55 in about a half second. Too late.

Nothing will help against laser. It will go off, but it's too late by then.

I drive 7-10 MPH over the limit and never have a problem. most cops allow that.

another for beltronics, but it's been way too long since I actually had one, so I wasn't sure if they had kept current.

re: laser you do sometimes get lucky, as I did on my way to a job interview last fall in Lansing. Believe me I had been going fast enough that I should have been waved over if the stray signal my passport picked up had been an actual reading. I literally stuffed the brakes when it went off as the laser alert is much more "panic-mode" inducing just by virtue of the tones it sends out. (The three cars in front of me in both lanes were all waved over)
