Try rush hour in Toronto. Be lucky if you hit 5mph for at least a 50 mile run. Glad I dont have to do that one anymore!!!!

heh, rush hour here is 3 cars in a mile, or maybe 6 clustered up at a red light...

Because I finally figured it out. Let the others rush to the bottlenecks, constantly gassing or braking to get off cruise. Not only do I get there, but the view to the left is better than the right when lifted.

It's only rush hour if your in a hurry. I am guilty of driving slow during people's rush to work. I think it's funny. Especially with the "Im in no hurry. I'm on my way to work." bumper sticker on the back of my shortbus suburban..I do rush home though..lol

ohhhhh I remember that, 5 collectors and 5 express on each side and every single one is backed up!

benefit there is when the bottleneck clears everyone FLYS I was going over 90 and barely keeping up with traffic.

if EVERYONE would drive 10 mph under instead of racing to tailgate the guy in front of him, we'd ALL get home 10-15 minutes faster.

Better yet. If everyone would go to the bar and drink for, between 3 and 5 hours it would spread out the traffic.

Been there done that one dragging my black Camaro on a car hauler. Faster than I expected but a bunch of A-Holes driving down that stretch (I94/I90 North/South). I had people cutting me off and riding the back of the trailer!

No thanks!

ahhh the old driving grind. driving downtown every day for 10 years after a while you just knew why people were driving slow.

1. unhappy middle aged man with a frown dreading coming home to his bitching wife and pain in the ass kids. he uses the drive home to wish he had made a different decision.

2. middle aged woman with a frown dreading coming home to her loser lazy ass husband and kids that said husband won't help with. she uses the drive home wishing she would have screwed the hot stud at the bar on the last girls night out.

3. the guy who goes to work every day is happy where he is at and lives for his family. doesn't have much cash, is cruisin down the eway in a beater with a wobbly front tire and the reverse lights on in drive and sporting a giant kool-aid smile.

that is one part of the longer commute I miss. you could just look at someone and feel their misery or joy.

Amen - the "caterpillar effect".

It's basic queuing theory - a smooth flow will get more volume through faster than a occasionally faster, but varying flow. Calculate your average speed - it'll be like 10 MPH under. Drive with your head, not emotions.

And BTW, I'm also one of those guys who drives slower (well, not ridiculous) in slippery weather. I keep right to let the accidents pass me so that I can get caught behind them later. When it's icy (or snow begins to pack on the roadway), 4WD does little for you except make it easier to get yourself out of the ditch (after you've taken me and three others out). An empty regular cab 4WD short box pickup is a spin waiting to happen - especially with wider rubber. I loved my Bronco, but that combo of short wheelbase, uneven weight distribution, high center of gravity, and 10.50 tires was a nightmare on slippery pavement.
