for those of you that don't think belonging to a club is better consider what you gain.
1. the majority of clubs the members run in groups so as if thier rigs fail in the trail there is someone to help get it running again ro chase parts. secondly the prospects of winching out on your own can suck if you have problems.
2. if the club has a run in most places the hotels, camp grounds and such give discounts for the club.
3. when dealing with issues on the political side of things the state sees clubs as many members with a voice rather then a couple of nut jobs on a soap box.

so when you ask what you have done for the sport lately please say you sent someone to a club that is recongnised by the state and that its doing its part to keep trails open.

One day my jeep will get out of the box and on the road.
I have the tools, knowledge and parts. Just can’t find time or room in the garage.

Maybe, I should buy mudhowg’s jeep to go with the rest of my fleet of yard art.
that sounds like a plan what would our name be?

You can do this with a few friends, no need for a club

2. if the club has a run in most places the hotels, camp grounds and such give discounts for the club.

If you try, you can try and work a discount without a club. Plus, AAA membership usually gets me as good of a deal.

3. when dealing with issues on the political side of things the state sees clubs as many members with a voice rather then a couple of nut jobs on a soap box.

GLFWDA is not a club, and is recognized by the state for its activity. It would be nice if all clubs could unite through GLFWDA to provide the type of power that groups like CCC have when it comes to interfacing with the state in number.

so when you ask what you have done for the sport lately please say you sent someone to a club that is recongnised by the state and that its doing its part to keep trails open.

I don't push people to clubs, I push them towards GLFWDA and have been doing this for years. Join a club if you want, but unless you are joining one of the bigger clubs, you probably don't have the visibility that GLFWDA has; and that is still not as big as some of the other recreational groups and definitely not as big as the anti-recreational groups.

x 5 million.

jmdzuk, johnnyj, nuzzy, maybe we should all plan a wheeling trip together, it will be our first official club outing

BTW I plan to re-up my GLFWDA membership after a 4 year hiatus from the sport and organization following the holidays.

Just as long as we can use unsafe whinching techniques while treading harshly and follow it up with not helping each other off the trail after breakage

On a personal basis, I am not big into clubs. I have met tons of wheeling friends through a variety of ways. Most thru GLFWDA as an individual member but also from hooking up with people here & other sites. I find that many clubs end up having members with such a diverse interest range and wide range of vehicle capabilities that my wheeling trips end up being dictated by those that are the least prepared. Instead, when planning a wheeling trip, I hook up with the people that are best suited for the particular trip.
An example: I enjoy the dunes alot as does Ironman. We wheel there alot together. I also wheel alot in Canada with Ironman and KB8YMF. But, if I was going to the Cliffs, my style of wheeling is a little different than either of them and one of us would probably be a little dissapointed. For the Cliffs, I would hook up with JohnnyJ and the Aho's. In both cases, these good friends would recognize the difference and not feel left out if not invited. But, in a club, someone would be sure to whine that they didn't get called.

Yes, United is larger than GLFWDA; but by being a member of GLFWDA you are not only supporting UFWDA since part of your GLFWDA yearly dues go to United, but you are supporting Michigan wheeling by supporting a recognized full-sized user association that is active in Michigan.

In a lot of ways, the online forum boom has negated the need for clubs. One can meet others interested in the sport, organize trail runs far more efficiently than phone trees, and not be tied into politics and attendancy requirements. I fully support paying dues and supporting the large statewide offroad organizations. But I feel clubs can pigeon hole too much. I want to go out and wheel with friends
