Default Reminder: Avoid Golden Compass

Just the text from the 2nd and 3rd books (movies coming). You decide if it''s appropriate for your kids.

Book 2: The Subtle Knife, page 319:

"Listen", said the man , sitting up with a struggle. "Don't interrupt. If you're the bearer of the knife, you have a task that's greater than you can imagine. A Child...How could they let it happen? Well, so it must be....There is a war coming, boy. The greatest war there ever was. Something like it happened before, and this time the right side must win. We've had nothing but lies and propaganda and cruelty and deceit for all the thousands of years of human history. It's time we started again, but properly this time...."

He stopped to take in several rattling breaths.

"The knife", he went on after a minute. "They never knew what they were making, those old philosophers. They invented a device that could split open the very smallest particles of matter, and they used it to steal candy. They had no idea that they'd made the one weapon in all the universe that could defeat the tyrant. The Authority. God. The rebel angels fell because they didn't have anything like the knife; but now...."

Book 3 The Amber Spyglass, page 31

Balthamos said quietly, "The Authority, God, the Creator, the Lord, Yahweh, El, Adonai, the King, the Father, the Almighty - those were all names he gave himself. He was never the creator. He was an angel like ourselves - the first angel, true, the most powerful, but he was formed of Dust as we are, and Dust is only a name for what happens when matter begins to understand itself."

Book 3 The Amber Spyglass, page 224, referring to the Garden of Eden in a parallel universe and how the introduction of sin helped free them from being livestock

"She had no name before then. She saw a snake coiling itself through the hole in a seedpod, and the snake said -"

"The Snake spoke to her?"

"No, No! It is a make-like. The story tells that the snake said 'What do you know? What do you remember? What do you see ahead?' And she said 'Nothing, nothing, nothing.' So the snake said 'Put your foot through the hole in the seedpod where I was playing, and you will become wise.' So she put a foot in where the snake had been. And the oil entered her blood and helped her see more clearly than before, and the first thing she saw was the sraf (dust, sin). It was so strange and pleasant that she wanted to share it at once with her kindred. So she and her mate took the seedpods, and they discovered they know who they were, they knew they were mulefa and not grazers. They gave each other names."

Book 3 The Amber Spyglass, page 518

"On the beach, just before you tried the alethiometer. He said there wasn't any elsewhere. It was what his father had told you. But there was something else."

"I remember. He meant the Kingdom was over, the Kingdom of Heaven, it was all finished. We shouldn't live as if it mattered more than this life in this world, because where we are is always the most important place."

"He said we had to build something..."

"The Republic of Heaven," said Lyra.

"The End."

The Catholic Church says you can't go see this movie. I'm Catholic and I'm proud of it. I had no intention of seeing this movie, but now because someone said i can't go see it, looks like I'm going to have to . :tonka: Its amazing how that works.

Speaking of National Treasure, I went to tour the Masonic Temple in Detroit like 4 weeks after that movie came out. The Mason that was giving us the tour just ripped that movie a new one and pointed out everything that was wrong with it. I thought it was funny. Can't wait to see the second one!

I went and saw The Golden Compass a couple nights ago. It was actually a very good movie. If you take it at face value, (meaning not trying to pin character's or organization's meanings to something in real life, aka the Church) it inspires children and adults alike to seek out the creativity and imagination in all of us.

I think the church loves it when these movies come out, because they can throw a fit and the press cares. Well i don't, so stop posting this crap.

If you are afraid that your church membership will leave your religion because they see a movie, you have bigger problems than the movie. The book is about intolerance, over control, and segregation of those different than yourself -- mostly by the Catholic Church. So now the Catholic church, and many other Christian churches, are telling its members to avoid seeing this movie, plus protest it being shown. Sounds like intolerance, over control, and segregation of those different than yourself is still alive and kicking!

BTW, I was raised Catholic, 12 years of Catholic schools and religion classes. They didn't like me pointing out the obvious to them back then either . . . hypocrits.

Hmm. Christians and intolerance. Seem to go hand in hand.

1) I am not catholic and find many things wrong with the catholic church.

2) The first book/movie is primarily setting up that the catholic church is bad. This is not my concern

3) The second and third books; however, establish that God himself is corrupt, that Satan could have saved humanity from God's grasp if he had only succeeded in Genesis and that now a little girl and a little boy (character introduced in the next book) must kill God and establish a Republic of Heaven.

You know Stephen King's "The Stand" was fiction too, but did a pretty decent job of portraying the Armagedon from Revelations.

If you are familiar with the bible, you will see that he draws directly (word for word) from scripture and contorts it. If you have children and about 3 weeks to read I recommend reading the books before taking your kids to this movie. I suspect that kids and parents will like the first movie, then get to the actual plot in the second one and say WTF!

when you tell people not to go see it because it's anti-religion, i'm pretty sure you just end up spurring more people to go see it.

dUH.

That may be an unfortunate result of educating people. If they read my first post though at least they will have direct quotes from the books to better understand the objections to the storyline. It goes much deeper than just the Roman Church making a public denouncement. If people are as lazy as flatfender that they need cliff-notes rather than just reading 5 paragraphs I am not so concerned, as it's likely most of life's details have already passed them by anyhow.

The funny thing is that Philliip Pullman (the author) spells it out at face value. It's not really buried in the story it's right on the surface. :miff:

Here he describes the plot is to defeat God as the rebel angels (Satan et.al) failed:

"They had no idea that they'd made the one weapon in all the universe that could defeat the tyrant. The Authority. God. The rebel angels fell because they didn't have anything like the knife; but now...."

And here is where he defines who this "God" character is:

"Balthamos said quietly, "The Authority, God, the Creator, the Lord, Yahweh, El, Adonai, the King, the Father, the Almighty - those were all names he gave himself."

Guess you missed that part.
