I'd say pass on a neon all together. I like them but I have a friend who had a 2000 with 13,000 miles on it and it was in the shop every other week. Stupid. It was never just changing parts stuff either. It was always stuff that no one could easily figure out.

Yea, 80,000 is roughly what a 2000 model year should be at.

Neons can be great fuel efficient DDs, but they're best used as zip code cars (never leave your home zip code).

They are not the most reliable, especially 2000s and earlier. Parts are cheap though.

My daughter is driving a 2000 neon with 89K on the clock. The car is running very well. This is her second Neon. The first was a 97 that was totaled when some old guy busted a stop sign. Then she drove 2000 XJ for a year, we traded the XJ for the Neon ( for the gas mileage).
She is happy and we have only had to replace the positive battery terminal lead. Nice little car, and after her accident I have faith in the body structure.

I had a 99 R/T, never had any trouble with it.
Use to drive to one of our plants about a hour east of Toronto.
Avg. 35mpg highway.

Bought it new, sold it at 103K in '04.

I had a 95, bought it new when they first came out. that car had a few issues, but was mostly reliable. Killer mileage.

My mom had a 2000. I thought it was a good car, and it was problem free for her.

If it was a good deal, I would buy it. they make killer commuter cars.

they are ok cars in the grand scheme of vehicles. the repair totals can be higher than average but not that bad. 80k is time for alot of scheduled services though.

I think Neons are ok. I had one for a while and it got super gas milage and was pretty zippy. The downfall of Neons is they can't seem to keep oil inside the engine, they have issues with head gasket failure.

My DD is a '99. I really haven't had many problems with it. It's sat outside all winter and has started up every morning for me. Good car with decent mileage. Mine has almost 120k on it. In a few weeks I'm going to take a 1500 mile trip with it.
