Default Durango tcase on Dakota

My friend has a 1998 Dakota 4x4 with the 318 v8. He blew the t-case. He bought new tcase afterwards off Ebay. The case was made for a 2000 Durango 4x4 360v8. He said the part numbers matched up so thats why he bought it. With the new t-case on the truck, it acts as if its in AWD or something because in 2wd all the wheels spin. When he puts in in 4x4 it actaully feels like 4x4.

Did Durango's come with AWD?

i dont think they has awd durango's i never remember seeing them when i was at the dodge dealer. It should be the same t-case. The dakota and durango are basicly the same thing, other than the dakota having a bed. I would double check the shift linkage to make sure its coming out of 2wd

Our 2001 Durango is AWD. Out of curosity do you know what he paid for it. Ours is sitting right now because the t-case took a dump and from what I have been hearing they are not cheap.

The original Dakota Tcase had 4high, 4low, 4 part time, and 2wd. The Durango case has 4high, 4low, and 2h. Just wanted to give as much info as possible. Wouldnt it mean its a different t-case?

since the gears are in different orders im thinking hes in the wrong gear. Hes using the wrong shifter for the Durange tcase so its tricking him . I told him to manually click the gears to verify.

hey Dodgegirl. Does your Durango t-case shift knob say AWD on it or 2wd?

the only durangos that were permanent awd were the 5.9 R/T's all others i believe have selectable 4wd. only thing to make sure is to go through the ranges and power brake it. once you can spin the back tires you know where 2wd is, 4 low will be obvious to find.

You could get both the Dakota and Durango in the AWD 4HI 4LO option. My ex girlfriends 01 is AWD and another guy I know with an a Gen 3 Dakota has the AWD t-case. REmember that these are electronically controled so if you do not put the right one in it will NOT work properly with out changing the controler as well and you would most likely have to change some things in the pcm and tcm.

That would be great if it doesn't have a viscous coupling or torque split that would allow the stronger front brakes to hold the front tires still while the rears turn.

88mudder - ask your buddy what the actual model is on the case he took out. There should be a tag on the back of the case.
