Yes I broke in the same location on the hill. I was crawling up nice and slow no problem or heavy pedal and I heard a small pop. At first I thought it was one of my coils adjusting, so I started going again. When I heard another pop and what sounded like grinding gears. My front tires came off the ground and I thought for sure I was going to test the rear stinger.

But the front end came back down and I started thinking that I poped out of 4 Low. So I grabbed the shifter to hold it in place, and gave it anotehr try when it grinded again and some one told me that my rear shaft was just turning and nothing was happening.

I knew it was pretty bad at that point. I backed down the hill and out of the way, dipping my rear end over a small burm, and when I went to move forward to get off the trail the only tire turning was the driver's side front, and again the drive shaft was spinning away but no rear tire turn. I got out to see what all had happened and that is when I saw the front shaft sheared off and based on what other people saw in the rear I guessed that the Pinion Gear broke inside Diff. I had to be towed a few feet forward and then I was able to limp it back to the loading area and I was able to actually drive it onto the trailer with one functioning wheel.

Thanks for your sympathy. It does suck. This is the 3rd axle break I have had since the HEMI install. I am skipping 60's and installing 2 1/2 Ton Front & Rear Steer Rockwells. My fear is I will have some 60's built for $10 to $13 grand and break them and be no better off than I am now. And I already have a set of Rockwells with in my reach at this time for a hell of alot less.

I do want to thank you and everyone else who made this trip possible for all of us to go. I want to definitely go back and see the rest of the park. Will the park be open for just an anytime trip up there? Or do we need to have a sanctioned event in order to go back?

Thanks agian,
Anthony

You do know you will have to lift it a lot higher to fit the rockwells under it right?

I plan on shaving the diff cover and running bigger tires to start.

And I am leaving the installation and fabrication to the professionals.

Thanks,
Anthony

That is not the the problem fitting rockwells, shaving the diff will give you more clearance than a 60 diff. The problem is fitting the center chunk or diff. It takes alot of lift to keep it from hitting the floor/ engine, frame and still have some uptravel.

Post pics later. We had to go to a wedding reception in Lansing last night. Those were some crappy roads!

Here's some pics of our snowy exit this morning. I tried it first & got stuck trying to make the sharp left turn. KB8YMF tried to to pull me first, no go. So we hooked me up in front of him & double pulled it out.

Next Ironman tried it & didn't make it any further. By then, it was iced up and he slid off even further. I tried to pull him, no go, so we hooked up his jeep & double pulled his too. About an hour and a half later we were loading up in town.

I believe they are just 7" extended TJ flares put on the XJ and painted to match.
