Default Staple Road Abandonment, Muskegon County

If ANYONE can make it, we need bodies in the room to support keeping this 'road' open to use. PLEASE! If you, or ANYONE you know, can attend it would be MOST appreciated. This one is going to be a tough sell and means a LOT to the 'system' in Muskegon county. It is an important part of a route connecting Whitehall back into the rustic transportation system.

The Hearing is :

Thursday, October 4 at 4:30 pm

Muskegon County Road Commission Offices
7700 E Apple Ave
Muskegon, MI 49442

THANK YOU!!!

We had 775 e-petition signatures, 64 hand written signatures, support from:

White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce
Twisting Trails SnoBroaves Snowmobile Club
West Shore Snowmobile Council
West Michigan Development Council
Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association
United Four Wheel Drive Associations
Two Trackers Four Wheel Drive Club

AND, most importantly, about 20 people IN THE ROOM!
(Compared to the opposition's 6)

This was just a data-gathering meeting, the CRC is scheduled to hear the results of this meeting on Oct 18th.

The October 18th meeting was rescheduled for this morning, the 24th.

The Engineering Department and the Manager both submitted recommendations to the Commission that the Petition be denied and the ROW kept. Unfortunately the MCRC is under attack politically for making substantially more $$$ than any other CRC in the state. There was a big County Commission (Not CRC) meeting just the night before to discuss the CRC. I think this has caused the Commissioners to use a little 'extra' caution.

The CRC refused to vote until they could take a look at the situation 'on the ground' themselves. I have been given the reassurances of all three Commissioners and the Manager that we would be invited to participate in the inspection to point out the evidence of previous blading of the ROW and the possible Highway-By-User trail that was developed as a result of the original obstruction.

I'll keep you posted.

Default Success!

The Muskegon CRC voted NOT to abandon this road.

It's not over yet though.

They left the door WIDE open to accept another petition IF adjoining landowners can work out a reciprocal easement that satisfies all concerned parties. The general public at large that would otherwise utilize the easement wasn't given any consideration.

If another Petition is put forward (and I believe it will) we will need a huge letter writing campaign. This road is only 1 of over 20 that I know are illegally obstructed in Muskegon County. This can very well set precedent for how the CRC handles the fate of the other roads as well. We can NOT let this go down without letting them know we're here and we're loud (when necessary).
