LCD TV's - recommendations

So, I'm looking at buying an new TV. Something around 40-42" as the room it will be in isn't big enough for a screen size of 50" (I think 46" would be the maximum size while still looking OK).

I've looked into Plasma Vs. LCD, and am almost set on LCD because of the fact that they fair better than plasma in well lit rooms (have a large 10x4 picture window plus skylights and other windows), the fact that LCD TV's tend to be lighter (plan to mount on the wall) and they last just as long as plasma....honestly, from what I've seen in the stores the picture clarity isn't even an issue between the two - they both look great to me.

SO, now I need to buy one...given they're somewhat pricey I'm looking for one that will last for atleast 5 years....what brands do you guys recommend, what would you stay away from?? I would like to have one with a built in DVD player, as well as the option to hook up to a bose system (though the latter shouldn't be an issue as they should all have RCA pre-outs)....I've been leaning towards samsung or panasonic - more less I'm looking for the brands to stay away from because they don't last/cheap/poor quality, etc....

Additionally, has anyone done a wall mount?? How much work was it, how hard was it to complete - I plan to cut a hole in the drywall behind the TV for all cable routing, and plan to make it exit the wall down at the baseboard trim.....

x2 on that phillips.

I have a samsung with almost the identical specs. I purchased the samsung because I knew it would be a wall mount, and I think it looks "sleeker" then the phillips hanging by itself.

I'm a big fan of the Samsungs. I have a DLP, but their LCDs are pretty spectacular. No one had the Samsung LCD I wanted when I went to buy, so I got the DLP (I didn't need wall mount, and DLP is cheaper).

x3 on that one. I have one and love it. Even the regular programming comes in pretty clear, although my cable box upconverts to 1080

x2 - been there done that!

Personally, I like Sony. I am a big audio / video geek and have spent more than my share on equipment (receiver alone is $1100.00 <- cheap).

Anyway, I don't bock at Phillips because they are some engineering leaders when it comes to electronics. They invented the CD drive, etc ....

I did look at those when I bought my 62 inch but the LCD Samsung.

When I bought my 62 inch the 27 inch Plasma was selling for nearly $20,000.

Yes, there are 2 options available. With or without the integrated HD tuner. My preference was without the HD tuner (a monitor) since I just used what the cable company provided.

Best quality is 1080p - if it is available to you - take it.

Fortunately, since I didnt have the integrated tuner, I can view 1080p.

Panasonic TH-42PX60U 42" Plasma HDTV

I have it across from windows in a bright room.
No issues with it.
Doesn't weigh much at all.

LCD vs. Plasma - depends on what you watch.
I have heard over 40", Plasma lead the way.
That was last year, maybe it's changed.

Can't loose either way

Plasma - up until a few years ago (mass production hit - I guess). The fine tuned it? Anyway, it had a 2 year lifespan. Now it supposedly goes beyond - but not tested (hasnt been 2 years yet).

Anyway, the windows thing. That is not because you cant see the picture but rather it reduces the Plasma lifespan.

Plasmas usually have a glossy screen on them that reflects the light, so in a way it is because you can't see the picture. The LCD is like a laptop screen, flat black and absorbs the light instead. I have my LCD 90 degrees from a window that gets sun all day and I sit 90 to the other side, and there is never any glare.

I've been in a lot of houses with plasmas, and I've yet to find a plasma that is easily viewable with windows behind the viewing area.

Its just the nature of them, extremely reflective.

LCD's have came a long way in the last two years.

No need to convince me :tonka: Techno geek here

I dont think the problem is the reflective screen - since you can by non-reflective screens for them. I do know the sunlight deteriorates Plasma.

I just picked up a Toshiba 42" LCD, ranked pretty high in Consumers, at ABC for $900. So far, I really like it. But, I was on a 27" crappy tube before this.

I have a 40" Samsung 1080p that I absolutely love. I have my Xbox 360 hooked to it and its amazing. I also have a big picture window and haven't had any issues with the lighting. Hope that helps.
