The local Mexican restaurant owner test drove a HHR and then drove it to Detroit to pick up his supplies and pay on his Lions tickets... 500 miles and kept it over night even though he wasn't supposed to. The salesman was pissed

They made him an incredible deal on the car though and he ended up buying it.

I work at Suburban Ford in Waterford. Dont come see me, we usually will not do over the weekend test drives anyway. Mainly because of people like you!

Not to mention its illigal to leave the state of Michigan on a Michigan Dealer plate of course its not heavily enforced.

People rent cars for business all the time and drive them everywhere.

If you fly into Baltimore, have to go to Hagerstown, then Wayne, NJ for a meeting and onto New York for a Yankee game, drop it off at La Guardia and fly from there to Detroit. All you have to do is pay a small fee for dropping it off at a different location.

I drove a rental car from St. Louis to Detroit Metro when I couldn't fly out due to weather conditions. People do it all the time. I found it amusing that one would assume such a thing. That's all.

You can take rental cars out of state as long as they know up front where you're going to be for loss control. You can rent up to full-size cars through Enterprise over the weekend for like $20-$30 a day. There is usually a mileage restriction of 300 miles per day but you should be fine with that.

As far as taking a dealer's car like that is a pretty shitty maneuver. If you lent out your car to a friend that he said he was just going to use to drive to work and back but he took it on a 300 mile trip, would you be happy? You're basically depreciating the car more which is almost like stealing money from the dealership.

Not if I was up front with them as I would be... i know people that have got cars from dealers for weeks at a time... dunno the reason behind it but I know it happens... like a demo car...

Oh ok. I've known people to do that without the dealer knowing.

If you were to ask them upfront then I don't see any fault in that. If you were honestly interested in buying a smart dealership would find it as an opportunity for you to get a real feel for the vehicle, especially since you're going on a short weekend trip.
