Default Key goes in ignition but won't turn

Hey guys,
When I put key into the ignition I can't turn it at all. It acts like the steering wheel is locked but taking the tension of the wheel isn't helping. It almost seems like the problem is getting worse. Earlier today I was having trouble and I was able to move the wheel around and it seemed to help.
I just went out to start it and played for 10 minutes and couldn't get it to move.
Hopefully someone has had this problem before and can point me in the right direction.
Any info appreciated.

Have you tried a different key?Maybe yours is worn.

I had same problem, wafers were gumed up... shot some wd40, just a little bit, into the tumbler and put key in and out half dozen times to free it up.

my friends moms mini van did it we had to replace the lock cylinder.

Has this on the wifes 97 4runner, replaced the lock cylinder, NAPA for 90 bucks, came with OEM keys. Told her to take the 5 pounds of crap off of the end of the key ring to not put so much weight on ignition. Did she listen........ The first one lasted 10 years and 147k miles though...



Oh yeah, when you replace the old one you probably need to turn the key to the acc position to lift the lock plate. Otherwise its drill bit city.

I got really sh*t faced one time and I hid my keys from myself and went to sleep (in the truck of course). When I woke up a few hours later I couldn’t find my keys (hidden behind my seat) so naturally I jimmied my knife into the lock cylinder and proceeded to break the tip off (ATS steal) into the lock cylinder. Realizing the stupidity of all this and the fact the stupidity was a side effect of my inebriated state I decided to go back to sleep. Woke up the next day and found my keys. Since there was now a piece of Benchmade steel sticking out of my lock cylinder I had to disassemble the plastic pieces (87 pickup) from the steering column. Then I pulled the wiring connector/switch off the back side of the lock cylinder. Once this is removed you can just used a penny or screwdriver or whatever to turn the switch (by-pass the lock cylinder) to run/start. The steering wheel will still want to lock up so you won’t be able to steal your truck from yourself… So this makes driving a bit tricky and I would not recommend anyone ever try and drive like this (except me). Maybe this was not completely relevant but I thought it was a funny story about ignition lock cylinders. Moral of the story: Hide your keys before you get drunk, in fact hide your knife too.
