Lately I have not had the money to give, and have not been able to wheel. If I ever get the chance to go on Trail rides and things. When I was younger and would go out on the ATV, I would clean the trails that I rode on. And if I camped out it was always cleaner after I left than when I got there.

Do you suppose the rest of us don't have jobs too?

Unfortunately, the state requires us to have insurance to do our trail maintenance. And unfortunately again, our insurance requires that all of the participants be members. Can't get around that........ it's our legal system.

So, talking specifically about scenery, a 6 hour drive each way on the weekend to Kentucky is far better than a 2 hour drive to west branch? Don't know about you but the logistics work better for me here in Michigan. Where do you go driving south that has better scenery in a 2-3 hour drive?

Plus, GLFWDA schedules at least one quarterly meeting every year in the Silver Lake area. We aren't all work, we like to play too.
How far are you from your nearest club? How about trails?

Does GLFWDA have the ability to legally bypass this with a loophole? Like a "trial membership" that would be issues to folks who want to help? Like a $1.00 3 day membership, or the likings?

Or once people become a GLFWDA member, do they have to pay the united dues?

Good point. Yes, I think there is a way but I can't say for sure. In years past, there was a $5 membership that was offered for races. This allowed people to come in from out of state & race under the insurance umbrella.

I am not versed well enough to know how that would apply.

We also had people who would use this loophole so they attend one sanctioned event per year. If I am not mistaken, this is still in effect to allow a "one time" trial membership.

Calling BOD members?????????????

Well I was just looking at new posts on GLFWDA (of which I am an individual member). Coming under fire now are Moab and Tellico. I have never been to either but I would most certainly like to be able to take a trip there sometime. I try to write letters and sign the online petitions and what not. There is more I could do too but more people need to be involved. If the Dems tkae full control after the '08 election expect it to only get worse. Much worse. We were lucky GW pulled Gore's Roadless Initiative that he had Slick Willie put through right before he left office. The are already starting to push something similar through again.

Hopefully it won't be too late before others decide to get involved.

You did alot of mapping/driving on your recent Grayling trip. And I know darn well your XJ is WELL setup for GPS mapping of trails.
Keeping record of the trips you already do would seem to help.

That sticked thread shows the opportunity to VOTE for the next VP of the organization. In the past, there have been accusations of the board not doing things right,:chiefwoohaw: :chiefwoohaw: etc. This is the opportunity to get involved or get your friends involved.

Chris, not picking on you, but yes, there are organized efforts. They get posted here and on the GLFWDA site.

In the past, there have been negative posts by people who are very popular on the sites. I have pm'd them asking why they wouldn't get involved & they didn't even bother to reply to my pm. Can't figure it out.

I don't have the answer.
I was one of those views, and didn't comment because It seemed like it was a notification rather then a discussion...

I did have a question about the GLFWDA quarterly meeting but wasn't sure how to ask it without sounding like I was complaining. It was simply are ALL the quarterlies in Grayling or are any closer? It seems most people live further down state, I know its something that when your already IN GLFWDA you know about well in advance, but when your not a member and want to check it out it is hard to do a 6 hour drive + meeting time, especially when most of your stuff is scheduled a month out already. It becomes a weekend/2 day thing when they are up there. I only ask because it seems like they are always up north someplace. I understand it partially probably due to having them held with a trail run. Just curious is all.

since whiterhino didn't answer it....

your membership to GLFWDA includes your dues towards UFWDA and the Voice, their version of the boondocker.

2 subscriptions, support locally and nationally for $35 AND you get a say in what decisions or actions are pursued.

the quarterly meeting floats around, it has been at silver lake, west branch, grand blanc, grayling......

it is usually tied to some sort of wheeling trip on the saturday before also.

And, not implemented yet, UFWDA is changing its dues structure. So, the GLFWDA dues may actually go down. If you are limited on cash you may have the ability to support your local region cheaper.

It's still in the structuring stage at United.

We still offer a one-time option for a single-event membership of ($10 or $15? - my folder is at home). If you choose to join GLFWDA within a year we will apply that one-time membership payment against your annual dues.

When I first joined, the quarterlies were always in Flint at a small banquet center. Then after that place burned down, they were moved up to Midland. During that time (probably 4-5 years I guess) there were always folks that lived outside of those areas that complained they had to travel.

In the past two years they have tried to increase attendence and build friendships and trust by trying to hold the quarterly meetings around the state, near areas where people can come up and wheel the day before and go to the meeting on Sunday. The idea was that if you had to travel, you could also wheel.

I'm not sure if it's a set rotation, but in the past year I think they have had the meeting in Mt Morris during the winter and did some wheeling at St Helen, one was near Flint with wheeling at the Mounds, another out at Silver Lake, and now a fall color run and meeting in Grayling.

So, in short, yes they move them around, and I think they try to make it so that you can wheel and attend the meeting.

We try to move them around the state so everyone has at least one that is close enough for a day trip. This year we were in West Branch, SIlver Lake x2, and next week in Gaylord. Last year West Branch x2, Flint, SIlver Lake. 2008 we are planning for West Branch, Silver Lake, the UP and one TBD. We always have either a planned event (SnoFari, Trolls Fall Color Tour, National Forest ride w/Two Trackers) the day before, or at least the opportunity for an informal run (Mounds, Silver Lake, etc). People seem to work together better if they get to know each other and play together too.
