Default Soldiers going Awol

I was just watching the news and saw a story on a soldier who went AWOL. It really frustrated me because the dude signed up in 2004 and said "i signed up to get out of New Jersey and see the world, i didnt expect to go to Iraq". He deserted his 12 month tour of duty. I understand people don't agree with the war and i don't know if i do anymore myself. But seriously, if you are going to sign up to defend your country don't puss out because you don't agree with it. Now he's hiding in Germany "waiting" to turn himself in. As far as i'm concerned i'd rather he and his buddies who deserted their nations can stay there. My dad was drafted to go to a country he had never heard of and had no idea why we were at war with them. He did his long tour over in Vietnam and busted his ass every day, he said it was a good experience but he had done his job and said he was done with the military. I just don't get why people sign up but when it's time to deploy they go awol It just makes me ashamed of some of the people in our country

Going AWOL is, has been, and should remain a crime - especially with an all-volunteer military. Failure to follow orders (i.e. not reporting) is a crime - punishable thru the military justice system.

If you join the military, you have made a commitment. The military has stepped up to their end of the bargain and you need to meet yours. People have to count on you to do your bit if and when the time comes - lives depend on it - literally.

the military will pay for you to get your unit enlarged. I thought that was what sucking up to your superior got you
