It has good power, but it bent the crossmember where the torsion bar is attached. also they have wayyy to many electronics.

1998 2500 chevy diesel, crew cab long box. 2003.5 24v H.O. with dodge auto trans and tcase with 17k miles on it. for the record, ifs blows goats.

I have a 2004.5 3500 SRW QC auto. I wish I had gone for the dually and a 6-speed though. I have had a power steering pump leak and get replaced, the fuel pump died and was swapped to an in tank style, and a rear brake caliper froze up (the pads and rotor were NOT covered under warranty fukc you very much DCX).

I have about 97000 miles on the clock and it runs like a champ and love the truck. I expect the tranny to die at 100,001 miles though. I am getting roughly 16-17 mpg empty 1/2 city 1/2 highway, and get about 12-14 towing my 2 car gooseneck. I haven't towed the fifth wheel far enough to get an accurate reading on fuel mileage yet. I figure it is closer to 10-11 though. Much more frontal area to drag thru the air.

Whatever you get, make sure you get a good set of gauges installed so you can see what your EGT's, boost, and tranny temp are doing. A fuel pressure gauge is another good idea, but I have not done that yet. I don't really have any real complaints about the truck. It never ceases to amaze me when I hitch it up and tow with it.

2005 Dodge 2500 4x4 quad cab CTD with the 48re auto

50,000 miles. Both front wheel u-joints and rear driveshaft u-joint went around 45k. Replaced the #*&% POS unit bearings with locking hub conversion when I did the u-joints. Ball joints need replacement. Still have the 70 mph vibes. No other problems.

Complaints: The AC is weak. The stock oil pressure gauge is fake (reading is calculated by the ecm, not actual measured pressure). Open vents on the fuel tank which can allow water and dirt in. They keep nagging to do the stupid “out of park alarm” E17 recall instead of fixing the parking pawl in the tranny. THIN sheetmetal.

Average about 16 mpg city 18 highway. With towing average is 15.5 mpg over the life of the truck. Smarty and gauges otherwise stock.

The CTD is an awesome towing machine and I will keep the truck until it dies. But, between fuel quality concerns, waiting for the egts to drop before shutting it down, diesel typically being more expensive than gas, etc, etc. imo the diesel is just not worth it unless you tow very heavy or tow all the time.

my 12V's run great, get great fuel mileage, have no vibes, ac rocks, the ctd is an awesome machinge, but between the fuel being cheaper, the turbo cooldown timer, fuel being generally the same price or cheaper than gas, etc, etc, etc, imo (in most opinions) the 12v is worth it by far, whether you tow heavy, light, or not at all.

btw, this post has about as much relevance as 95geo's duramax post.

the only time you need to let your turbo cool down is when you are at 1200+ degrees for quite a while and then just shut it down, if you feel you need to let the turbo cool during normal towing/ use then you are paranoid.

with any diesel, get fuel at places that sell large volumes of fuel, add a secondary filter and change them every other oil change.

the only downside I have seen is the 2-3 mpg drop with winter blend fuel.

Busyfixin LOL. Yeah there is an attraction to the older, simpler trucks. They even have that great diesel exhaust smell, unlike the newer, smogafied crap!

BTW where are you getting all that cheap fuel from?

95geo, paranoid?…could be. Seems forums like TDR can blow little things out of proportion. I let the pre turbo egts get down to around 300 before shutting it down. Maybe I’ll shoot the turbo with an infrared thermometer to see whats really going on during the heat soak after shutdown.

Fuel, yes it makes sense to buy from stations that move large volumes and installing secondary filtration is good too, but neither deal with lubricity issues. So for diesel you have to be more selective of where you buy and, to play it safe with USLD, use a lubricity additive at every fill up.

The oil on my 05 gets extremely sooty very quickly (supposedly from the third injection event to keep the kitty warm), at 5,000 miles it comes out pitch black. Three gallons of oil per change adds up.

None of it is a big deal, just minor pita on a daily basis compared to a gasser. To do over again, it would be a Power Wagon with the hemi, then just buying the cheapest gas available, driving it like it was stolen and throwing a new motor in it every few years.

Hmmmm interesting thoughts.

the 5.3 in my truck tows ok, but I tow nearly every weekend in the summer and a diesel would be oh so much nicer with the added torque....

We've had many CTD's over the years and have had no complaints. But we rarely had one for more than a year so we dont know what they would do for the long haul. We always got the manual and got about 18 city 16-17 highway. They do great for towing, a friend towed 2 tj's on a gooseneck to Moab and back with no problems last year.

I have been pricing diesels of all makes and models, under 20 grand, and they all have around 100,000 miles, and are 2002 and older, so I would say it is a good deal.

If my dad purchased the 2007 mega cab he leased, it would have been in the low 30's with 16k on it, 5.9 cummins manual.

To me it seems like an ok deal. Maybe look around some more.
