Another Tow Rig Decision????

2500 Suburban with 8100 big block or Excursion with V10?

Which would you guys recommend as a better rig? I've towed with a couple 8.1L in trucks...but never driven a Suburban with one. I believe the version in Suburbans have less hp and torque than truck version.

I've never driven a V10 Ford so don't know what they are like for towing power etc.

These would obviously be used vehicles probably '01 or '02s.

I currently have a 1500 Suburban with 5.7L, it tows my 30' camper okay. Our camper loaded up weighs in around 7500#. My Jeep on a trailer probably weights 7000#ish. So I'm thinking a heavier duty rig with more power than my current 'Burban is in my near future.

Thanks for any advice

I know my buddy had a big block 2500 avalanche, and he LOVED it for a tow rig. I think it'd be better on gas than the excursion.

none of them, i'd go diesel :tonka:

but i'd go with the suburban, looks better, and i drove a V10 F?50 once and didn't really enjoy the noise the engine made.

My nephew had a v10 in his F250..........The engine and tranny were modified by an Expensive brand name off road company........

I have to admit, it could turn the tires, and was very peppy, (but it should be with a blower)

It was a sad day, watching my nephew cry as the truck caught fire 30 minutes after he parked it, because of a short in the stock wiring harness.

Have you ever seen Mickey Thomson aluminum wheels melt before?

We glanced at prices for Excursions with diesels this weekend. WOW. People think they are gold plated or something. Most were $5K over KBB private party. Too bad they quit making them, and too bad Dodge still has never entered the large SUV market based on the 2500/3500 platform.

What year were you looking at?

I picked mine up for $19K with 45K on the clock. That was $2K less than I sold my 02' diesel F250 for and that had 70+K on it.

You just don't like anything that makes significant power.

I'd go with the Excursion, cuz it just seems to be more your style Roady.

as far as gas engines. I would go with the Suburban

I had an 03 excursion with the v10 and loved it! man I miss that rig....tons of power, had the 4.07 gears I think and it just played with anything I put behind it......oh well, house was more important (thats the only reason I got rid of it)

oh and I got around 17.5 mpg with it.

Scot why would you suggest the 6.0L over a 8.1L? From everyone one I talked to the there is hardly a difference in gas mileage and they 8.1L tows better than the 6.0L.

Now the brand new 6.0L with the 6spd auto is a great combo..but that 6spd isn't availible in Suburbans and I cant afford a new one anyway.:stan3:

17.5? Wow I have a hard time believing you, unless you're going 55 everywhere.

I have trouble getting 14 mph with my 5.9L V8.
