91...thats still the old style body, correct?

$4000, I'd pass, unless you WANT the old school body. To me, that means everything on that truck is designed in the 80s. Old interior, old body, etc.

For reference, I recently bought my dodge - 1996 3/4 ton ext cab longbed 4x4, V10, new trans, loaded power everything remote start alpine/infinity system, etc for $5000, with 115k miles and I've done nothing but put on new tires.

Lifted, i'd guess thats an 8 mpg truck, maybe 7 towing..

I'd get something newer for similar money.

ya it would be the old square body style. and I agree $4000 is too much unless it was a dually and in awesome shape.

1991 (TBI) 454 = 255 hp

1996 (vortec) 454 = 290 hp

What kinda shape was it in? Reg. cab?

And sorry I will never own a 6.5 diesel again ,my 350 in my van would out tow my 93 2500 that I had .Good luck though .

The truck I'm looking at will probably be sold for $3200 to $3600 my guess

And it has a 60 in front with a manual tranny .And to me these are important for an old truck (something I can work on) Plus I need a 4 door a extended cab with my kids is to much fighting

88-98 is all the same body style. The dash's and grille's are what changed in those years. If the truck is in good shape i would say that's a probably a fair price for a 4-door.

4-door's are worth alot more then ext or standard cabs.

If it was me i would take as much lift out of it as possible for it to be used as t tow vehicle.

reg cab. rust free, very good shape, and yes i share your pain on the 6.5. i am getting to know it's problems better and better everyday. now that i have the vaccumm pump fixed though, it pulls awesome.

i was just using my truck as something to run with. i know you are looking for something different.

judging by what you have to say about it initially i think you'd be in for a long painful journey with that truck. imo, if it's been modded, and the guy that owns it is a dumbass, you are in for a hurtin.

i disagree. id say the guy is familiar with the ever too popular word vortec, and doesnt know the difference. 4k isnt too bad an asking price for that truck. if you could pick it up for 3000-3500, id say your doing good. im not sure what trans that would have. if its strait, and runs/feels good going down the road, go for it. its getting hard to find a clean/strait square body crew cab nowdays, so they're holding their value. is it a 4 or 5 speed trans?

Not to drag this thread further off topic, but I think your old 6.5 tows great. But thatís after I pulled the lift off, slightly smaller tires, new lift pump, and I think the rear brakes were dragging the pad was broken off and was wedged between the drum and shoe.

Nope your right GM didnt start using th evortecs until 1996 in the full size models. In the smaller models like the Blazers and S-10s they had the 4.3 Vortec in like 1991 lioke you said. I use to have a 1995 GMC Extended Cab 1500 4x4 Pickup and it only had a regualar 350, not the vortec.

ok you kids need an edumacation.
`73 to 91 C/K R/V series trucks used the old square body when it came to Burbs, K5s and 4 door crew cabs till the end of `91. the lighter trucks and extended cabs switched to the new body in `88 including cab & chassie set ups with regular cab.
the engine that is in the `87-91 454 trucks is the old Gen III its the same engine they built forever in a big block. the TBI is GMs add on one. its an adaptor plate bolted to the stock 4bbl intake( I kid you not) its still got side saddle tanks that can be either twin 16s or twin 20s with trailer tow package. as for trans if its built after `90 its a 4L80e 4spd. the early ones are turbo 400s(3 spd) they came with 282 style T case.

mine even had 3:73 gears and was dually 4x4. with the best techs around we couldn't get mine over 5 mpg running empty. I sold it and its now out around Highland somewhere. mine was mint in and had 165,000 miles on it. sold for $8500 back in `94 the guy I sold it to re sold 6 months later to the current owner. he claimed it has 97,000 miles and I set him straight. I bet the guy who sold it to him didn't figure the state had records on it at the original miles.

Thanks for the info on the motor ,the truck I was looking at had a 4speed and 205 set up .The owner said he got 12 mpg at best with 33s .I think he was doing voodoo math.Cuse I drought it got 12mpg, but I don't know him so I cant call him a liar :tonka:

So any idea what tranny it would be .Said it was a 4 speed with creeper ,assuming he meant, 4 forward gears one being a granny low.
