I'm sure this will open up a big can of worms here but I'm sick of hearing about this shit.

We don't get hurricanes in Michigan but we get tornadoes so I'll use that as an example. If your house got blown down by a tornado would you expect money from the federal government to rebuild? I wouldn't...I'm sure my neighbors would come over and help clean things up and I would call my insurance man and things would get rolling. It would take some time but eventually it would get repaired or rebuilt without help from the government.

Too many of these people are sitting around waiting for somebody else to take care of them.

oh noes! They lived in a floodplain, didn't have any savings, and they didn't have house insurance.

The last time I checked, this isn't my responsibility to take care of them.

MAYBE if they got off their lazy asses, and found a job, they could afford to fix their mistake themselves.

x2

I also am tired of hearing about people with trailer/house/apt fires needing handouts because they were uninsured. Clothing until the insurance pays out ok, PS2 and TV bigger than a 37 inch because of eye sight not ok.

I clicked on this thread with the sole purpose of seeing just how stupid the responses would be...
I was so wrong. We have the same point of view on these "something for nothing" pieces of shit. Everybodys got their hands out wanting something for nothing. These people had 10,000 dollar shacks and are now getting 100k houses, and still probably dont have jobs or a clue on how to earn some money legally

I have to agree with the fact that is just a lack of self-responsibility some people are the way they are there. IMHO, if they are expecting the gov't to take care of them, they need to move to a different country.

I know a guy who is a rescue swimmer in the CG. He was stationed NOLA for a year or so before and during Kat. He was on all kinds of stuff on TV when it happened. He is now stationed in Traverse City. Can't wait to talk to him in a couple weeks.

First off, New Orleans is below sea level. Second, it is in tornado alley. And third, it is in the hurricane zone. So really, the city should have never been there in the first place. Now that mother nature has proven that, rather than rebuild it, we should all get the fucking clue, and those dumbasses should take their shit and head to Kansas.

Funny you mention Kansas. My relatives that lived in Metarie ( a sub of NO) ended up there at their in-laws . . . . . . . . . .about 4 days before Katrina!

Oh no, they can't do that. I was just watching a special on this the other day. They are just going to build bigger/stronger levies to protect new orleans. It will only cost US tax payers a couple hundred million more. What are you bitching about?

I have been to New Orleans since the hurricane. Many of these people are hard working people who had nice homes, and were talked out of carrying insurance by mis-informed insurance agents who said they didn't need it.

Many are fixing their homes...little by little. The Home Depot and Lowe's in the area are consistently packed with people buying supplies to fix their homes. I think anyone who live near coastal waters learned that they must carry insurance now.

I have to disagree. I spent my fair share of time down there post katrina, not in New Orleans proper but in several parishes surrounding it and I have to say that I didn't see very many respectable upstanding people at all. Most of the folks I came accross didn't just not have insurance on their house. They didn't have it on there boat, their car, or anything else of value. Also a lot of the people were already on some kind of government assistance prior to the hurricanes, which only strengthened their sense of entitlement to government aid after the disaster. These people have never had to take responsibility for anything and it's upsetting that we are further leading them around by there hands. I don't know if that makes sense or sounds right but damnit I know what I am saying.

and then when they get a handout to rebuild, they rebuild in the same place below sea level, so it can get blown away again by another hurricane/flood.

Last time I checked it wasnt the governments job to tell people where to live.

Why would you EVER listen to an insurance agent who tells you that you DON'T need insurance? It's his JOB to sell you insurance... It's also just common sense to insure your house against anything that could possibly happen to it, especially if you live in a below sea level city situated next to a large body of water that also happens to be in a hurricane and tornado zone. For instance, I live near a river, but I don't have flood insurance because I'm at the top of a giant hill and the tiny Saint Joseph River would have to swell and rise about 70' just to reach my doorstep.

My Aunt didn't make the Feds come and get a fishing boat out of her yard 2.5 miles from the beach back when Camile wiped out Biloxi, MS back in the 70s(?).
