look for an side to side play in the rear axle to see if the bearings are shot.

look for puff of smoke out the ehhaust to tell if its have valve/guide problems.

watch out for really soft and bouncy shocks in the rear too.

overall they are rock solid machines but they are also older so wear and tear becomes a factor. i had one for years and they are lots of fun and real reliable. cheap to fix too. if you have any other? just ask.

Go to www.servicehonda.com and check out their OEM parts selection - they are by far the cheapest place for new parts AND sometimes a new part isn't that expensive (new cyl head for my wife's 2006 CRF250X was only $200).

Also, if you need to replace the cam go with a hotcam OR the old one from my wife's CRF150F might fit (for $cheap).

does the motor still have compression? You also may have bent a valve.

only has like 30 lbs compression. But i took the head off and they seem to be seating well. SO hopefully i can get away with the parts i bought(rings, rocker, cam, and gaskets)

If the head is off, spray WD40 in your ports and hold the cylinder head up so you can look for leaks (from underneath) at the valves.

From experience, a valve can look like it is perfectly straight and seating well, but even the smallest bend in the valve stem will kill your seal with the seat. The look of your rocker leads me to believe it broke when a valve smacked a piston.

I would also highly recommend a new timing chain while you're at it.

I'm probably gonna replace the valves while I'm at it. I was thinking about it, and i did a wet test and the compression didn't go up, and there is a chip in the exhaust valve.

Well, it sucks you have such a large rebuild on your hands, however, the little 200 should be good for another 20 or so years.
