Default Dodge Ram, not shifting into OD

1998 Dodge Ram 1500 v8 automatic 4x4 extended cab long box

Ok, friend called and said he pulled a light trailer (less than 2000 pounds) down state to Indiana and back. Dipshit was running in OD. He said everything was running fine for hours and then he stopped for gas and got back on the highway. When he did this, it would not shift to OD....at all. Not even try to go to OD. Just 1, 2, 3 and that's it. From what I understand, the converter doesn't even lock.

Pushing the OD button does nothing.

OD light not flashing but does come on when you push the button.

No check engine light.

He drove it to Indy in 3rd gear, no other issues. Called the dealer and they advised to disconnect the battery for half hour and then see if it shifts or tries. Nothing, exactly the same.

Drove it all the way home to the Soo with no issues.

Fluid nice looking, full, and not burnt. No leaks.

Any ideas on normal things other than "you need a new trans" that you know of (so I can research them) before I look at this thing?

TPS controls TCC, that might be causing it not to go into O/D as well.

Fluid got hot enough to shut down O/D??????

Those are really the only two things I can think of.

BTW, I tow 1500 lbs. in O/D w/ my Ram and I don't have a problem.

could be a number of things, my guess is the lockup/OD solenoid pack since it does neither. After that there are quite a few things that control operation. Temp sender, one of the VSS's - does cruise control work?, TPS, electrical connector on the drivers rear of trans has greenies in there. Or wosre case it took out the over drive unit or broke a snap ring. Pull the pan and see if there a pieces of snap ring in there.

It doesn't work with the trailer not on there either.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow and hook the MODIS up and see what she says.

Thanks

Well, everything looks fine on it. Fluid good, pulled the pan, nothing wrong in there. Looked at the springs that they say break sometimes and everything from where I could see was fine.

Computer is commanding OD and thinks it is going into OD.

No codes.

if the comp is comanding it in , i would say that its in the sol. the od unit in the dodge is very strong, the problem comes in when the fluid gets heated up and reduces pressure to the unit. that should he a eletronic unit, thus i am not that familar with them. but i would imagine that the probelms are either- connection bad, bad sol, bad wiring. your computer is probley looking to see a difference in volage due to the grounding of the sol. it could see this if it is shorted out. it also could be the probelm of the filter being pluged and not allowing enough fluid to go to the unit its self. or a peice of clutch pack blocking the passage. good luck.

btw i tow over 4000 in od and no probelm. i only take it out if it starts shifting back and forth alot, other than that i keep it in od.
