Has anyone or can it be done, rotate the centersection 180* and put the pinion in a high location? I know it will reverse the rotation of the axle. Looking to see if that is possible before I pick one up. Has anyone converted a 9'' rear to make it a front section with either cv flanges or ujoints.

Any help is appreciated

Not to be rude, but for the people that can only respond with "google it" or use the internet, F### off. I am asking for people that may have done it first hand, not some 35 year old fat ass living in mommy and daddy's basement that fill the internet with untrue or useless info. Besides, the next question you ask, I may have the answer to and will just tell you to "google it"

I thought it would work and I've posted that identical question....there is a reason it wont, and I don't remember...
anyways heres a solution...

Currie builds a "hi-9" front but they use a special high pinion 3rd member, they also use some nice ass F450 knuckles and some custom made shafts...They will build you an axle or you can buy just the tube and put your own knuckles on. You can also get the high pinion 3rd member for your rear end from them.

Yes it has been done 1000000000 times before.

Almost all the rear engine buggy guys do it. They also do it when they build mog or hummer 9" hybrids.

IIRC you will have drill some new stud holes in the housing or flip the whole thing.

if you just flip it over you will have oiling problems too, you need an oil slinger to get the pinion bearings lubed.

like has been said before you can just flip it or you will travel in the opposite direction. the best alternative is the link white rhino posted.

in order to run the standard 9" center upside down you need to either have your engine mounted backwards in the vehicle (moon buggy) or put hummer/unimog/volvo portals on the ends. the portal box adds reduction while also changing the rotation direction.

search "sunray" and "diamond axle" on pirate4x4 or google for more info

I have done it with hummer portals. I did not put in a slinger either. Just over filled the housing. Never had a problem. Like said above the axels will spin backwards. The 2 gear portals change it back or you can run the motor backwards (In the rear)

I was thinking of kingpin style ends welded on. They do have reverse cut gears availible from dts and other ring gear places so that is what got this whole thing started in my head.

I still need the portal to have the axle spin the right way, but the reverse cut gear will make proper contact for the front to work properly. If I kept stock gears in it, it would be equivilant to driving backwards all the time and the gears would grind away faster.

Reverse cut gears do not rotate in a different direction. They are just cut differently so the coast/drive sides of the teeth are correct. Gears should never "grind away" if they are done right.

a rear low pinion propels the vehicle forward on the "drive" side of the gears, a front high pinion does the same. a front low pinion propels the vehicle forward on the "coast" side of the gears the same as a rear high pinion. this is why you want a high pinion in the front and a low pinion in the rear for ultimate ring and pinion strength.

you could run a high pinion housing and gearset upside down to make it a low pinion and THEN put portals on it to correct the rotation direction.


cvwindows; did you ever run your flipped 9s at highway speeds for any amount of time? for a buggy I dont think oil slingers are super important but for road use bearings dont last long without oil flow.
