Default How much clearance do you need between your radiator and fan?

I got a new radiator for my '80 however it's just a little different than my original radiator, it sits further inside the engine compartment than the original. Anyway, there is now roughly 1/2-3/4" gap between my fan and radiator.

I had but I've got a full 3 inches of clearance between my pulleys and my radiator, I may have the room on the right side of my radiator (opposite the alternator) But I'd really have to have one in hand to find out. Are there any other electric fan options that may not have so much girth?

Didn't someone say in another thread that you could accidentally switch polarity on a taurus fan and have it turn the other way? Could I do that on purpose and turn it into a pusher? I want this to be as cheap as possible since I have very little money and 40 days until I have to move.

I have a spare taurus fan you could use to mock it up, but I'd need it back. You can also look at how mine is mounted and measure to see if we have the same size radiators. My truck should be back here this week.

I'd love to come look at yours but I don't know that I could borrow the fan, my only transportation right now is my motorcycle.

You have more clearance then i do. Just put the 350 in my 85 and i cant fit a belt between the water pump and radiator let alone a fan. I was going to run a taurus fan but it wont fit in front. You'd have to cut up the grill or the radiator support. Mine has the ac cooler on the front though. Might fit better with out that. So i sold the taurus fan to bajatoy53 and ordered a low profile 10in e-fan out of summit. It was only 40 somthing for the fan. And 25 for the control system for it. If one wont cool it i can easly fit two 10s out front.
Thats the route im going.
Im also curious on the clearance thing cuz mine is so close. You beat me to posting this.

Yeah, I don't think the taurus fan won't fit there unless you make it a pusher. I've got a little more clearance than that, and couldn't fit mine. Of course, my entire front clip is showed backward due to so many rock impacts.

The fan can run both ways, although I don't think its as efficient in reverse, not a huge deal, though.

For controls, at least in normal direction, I'd get a universal fan control setup with a little temp probe, and use that to control the low speed. Then a manual switch with a ~75 amp relay for the high side. You can get bosch 75 amp relays for a reasonable price. I'd carry spare relays for the low speed, and components to hard wire it on, just in case.

With my new radiator I have about an extra inch in front of my radiator where I can fit a fan. I may just drop in at parts galore and grab one, if it doesn't fit I'll sell it here in the marketplace.

Mine was 30 bucks from a junk yard. Id just borrow the one 88yj has and mock it up with that first so you dont have to worry about resaleing it if it dont work.

I could just add some rope and wear it on my back. It has form and might be functional too.

1/2 to 3/4 of an in isnt enough

I changed fans on my YJ to one that was slightly larger and had about that much space

with the engine running and pulling it will pull the fan blades towards the rad and the rad towards the fan

and then if your engine mounts have any wear in them at all whammo you need to fix a rad

I know this cause I did it twice before I figured out what was going on

Actually mud'n'truck might be on to something, I hadn't thought of a dual set-up yet. I will look at some of the better controllers I've read about and see if they can accommodate

Thats exactly my concern, thanks for the response BTW. I am hammering out some research right now until my body overcomes insomnia. It looks like I'll be going the electric fan route.

Id go with 1 10 on the front with the controler. If it doesnt cool it run 2. Looks very easy to put 1 on, little harder to run 2.

This is the controler i ordered
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLX%2D31147&N=700 +0&autoview=sku
And the fan i ordered
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
If you can wait a couple days ill tell you how they work. Should be here tomorrow. Get them installed by tuesday hopfully.
Ill probley have to order a second one to cool the 350 though

That'd be sweet, I could come to you even, whatever works for you. Hell I could see both set-ups in one day since you're both south.
