It's quite possible that what happens in Iraq will be very similar to what happened in Vietnam, that is, we will sign a peace treaty that attempts to claim success, after which we will quickly withdraw our troops. Relatively shortly afterwards (2 years max) whatever government we leave in place will collapse at the hands on our enemys (in Vietnam it was communists, in Iraq it will likely be Islamic extremists). Peace will then be achieved by oppressing any descenting voices.

A pro-American, democratic, peaceful country. I just don't see it happening.

The problem with Iraq is the only way we can get out is if the government gets to a position that is stable or appears stable. A democratic government though is not possible in Iraq I believe. There are many scenarios that can potentially play out, but I think the one with the most merit is Iraq itself fracturing and reforming country lines along sectarian boundaries with possibly a chunk being absorbed by Iran.

kurds, sunnis, shia's, and surrounding countries. It won't be worth the paper it's written on, and won't hold up after we pull out, but it will allow us to say we tried.
