258 Crank and Rods (possibly)

I'm building a stroker in my engine machining class. The crank and rods that I'm using are from an engine that I found in the corner of our quanset hut, we've lived there for 20 years now and didn't know it was back there.

I think they're all good, but I don't know. So just in case, I'm wondering what people have lying around that they would let go for somewhat cheap (or even free? ).

Just in case mine turns out to be more destroyed than the human eye can see.

Thanks!

Unless Maganafluxing reveals a Crack you should be able to save it... You have the tools available to straighten, Grind, and Balance it..

Quite true. But I have no idea if it's been remachined before, why it died, how extreme the bend is if any. Or if the rods are really bent, cracked.

If by some chance I can't use my components I want to be able to know where find some for cheap and get right back on the project.

Hi Russ,

I'm not sure what exactly what your impression of "cheap" is, but I have a running 258 from a '78 CJ-7 that I plan on selling on eBay soon. I was told that the cranks in '78s are desirable for stroker motors, as they were balanced a little differently from later-model 258s...the guy who was telling me this sounded well-versed in strokers. This motor also has a Holley carb.

CLICK HERE for AVI video clip of motor running.

$75 takes the complete motor. It's still in the vehicle,, so I'd need a little time (or help) to get it pulled. This may be more $$$ than you're looking to spend, but it's the absolute minimum i'd sell it for since it runs.

E-mail me at one.x.one.craig@gmail.com if you're interested.

Craig

hmmm.... I might just take it anyways. Mine is the later; lighter crank I had a thought on something earlier in the day.. Have to check on numbers first.

I'll get back to you on that.

Oh, and cheap as in - around 50% or less than bought new or already reconditioned. Seeing as I have almost everymeans of reconditioning a crank at my disposal.

Hi Russ,

Any word on this yet? Another guy contacted me and is interested in this motor, but I told him I'd give you through this weekend to decide if you want it. Let me know.

Thanks,
Craig
