Default Laptop buying help

I'm buying my daughter (11) a laptop for her birthday.
Need a little advice on an inexpensive laptop, and where you would buy from like Dell or something Costco carries.

An older dell off of eBay shouldn't run you more than $300 or so used...

Bought my kid a Dell E1405 for xmas. With some extra options it cost me like $900.00. It's a very capable machine for the price. I think the base model of it was like $699.00.

Dell & HP both have good and cheap laptops these days. They'll be within $20-30 of each other for comparable specs. The advice on Memory is simple; "Mo betta"

The only other advice I'd offer is to get the "no questions asked" warranty from the manufacturer. (Not a store brand service plan.) Over the next three years, the laptop will be broken some way, some how.

Good luck...

The mid-range laptop segment is pretty big, and you get a ton for the money.

I dunno. I bought mine at best buy over a year ago. No matter what you buy, they'll have something better out within 3 months. It sucks.

Just remember, Costco doesn't offer that kickass warranty anymore on electronics anymore. People at the Dell store and kiosks are snakes. Don't count on the people at the stores too much, most of them just want a sale, or are indifferent in general, as in not giving a fukc .

I have a gateway. I stepped on it one morning, it's been dropped once and my wife and 8 year old use it, which means they set it on the leather couch and let it get hotter than hell. I also spilled some beer on it once, maybe a sip. I haven't had any major problems with it yet, and it gets used a ton.

Dell has had some hardware issues with their PCs lately (I bought & returned one for this reason). I ended up buying a Lenovo (formerly IBM) laptop for $599.99 after rebates, and I'm very happy with it.

I've had 3 dells in a row, and we use them at work, with good results.

CHeck here:

http://www.deals2buy.com/

They post good deals. Keep an eye on the deals, because sometimes they are moving a higher model for a good price.

My wife's current laptop we got $390 off, which made it cheaper than the lesser model we were looking at.

Other than that, I've got 15.4" and 17" widescreen models here at home now. The 17" screen is really nice size, but BIG and HEAVY. My 15.4" widescreen is a very nice machine. Battery life is excellent, I can give 3 hour presentations off battery, and the battery charges very fast. Understand, that a 3 hour presentation, I've running heavy software usage full time, there's no idling or low power mode going on. If its intermittant use, I often bring my computer home from work and run it all weekend surfing Gay&Lesbian 4x4.com all weekend, and never recharge it.

Finding one for under $1000 should be relatively easy. Some things to consider when getting a laptop:

1gb of ram should be your minimum.
A large harddrive is ideal. Mine's 80gb and I already filled it.
DVD-ROM's are great for portable movies. I tend to use that option all the time.
Most don't come with a Floppy anymore. Spend $20 and get her a 1gb flash drive to go along with it.
The screens should be fine, but don't go too big... it's a laptop after all. It should be easy to pack and be portable. 15-17" seems to be ideal but that's my own opinion.
Opt for a better battery or an extra one. Trust me. This is invaluable when you're travelling. I had Dell send me a 9-cell battery instead of a 6, and I definitely made the right choice.

My entire laptop setup ran around $900 brand new with all the options I wanted. I'm sure you can find a good deal for her somewhere.

... k, I guess I'm the only dork that takes his laptop on family vacations to avoid the boredom.

That, and I'll admit. I missed the whole being 11 part.

Always used Toshiba but my last one went south too damn fast. IBM's are the shit now a days.

I still opted for a 1500 Dell but its my Biz notebook and a bad Mofo. Problem is your stuck with crappy ass Vista on any Dell puter unless your a business. Then you can still get XP pro.

They have sub 500 laptops all the time on sale. Sometimes with free shipping.

u can buy a laptop from best buy for under $500 that is a nice computer. Won't play games well if at all but for the normal stuff it works great... also i would consider buying the extended 4 year service plan.... get the accidental.

If you spill stuff on it and it brakes its coverd, take it to the customer service counter... or even if the screen brakes... all coverd.

www.deals2buy.com - they assemble deals/coupon/scam codes on everything - and hot link you to the direct vendor, with instructions on how to get the listed price.

every week, one can easily find a dell, gateway, ibm(lenovo) or HP/Compaq dal there for a sub $500 laptop. If you get a year out of it at that price then call it good. Anything after that is bonus time.

edit: pwned by not reading the entire thread. Summarize my post by: "what Jesus said"

If you watch the dell refurb section/dell outlet:tonka: you can get yourself good deals. Especially with the hours you keep:tonka: :tonka:

With a refurb you still get a warentee.

This is what I have for grad school. I've been happy with it other than some Windows issues that I had for a while. I reinstalled XP and it was fine. Mine was about $1600 though, but I got a lot of bells and whistles as far as speed and memory. This was a year ago too and prices have dropped a lot.
