Please follow this outline for making posts in this forum. We will fine tune this as it evolves.

Post destination in the subject line. including aprox city and state.
Please make a seperate thread for each destination.

Example:

Garmin's Mapsource default is *.gdb

*.gpx is web standard and is readable by most GPS software. It can included Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks.

*.loc is also common but includes limited data (name, small description, lat, and long)

*.MPS is used for some maps

Those are the common ones I use. I'm sure others will chime in with ones for their devices

Geocaching.com uses .loc for their free service and .gpx for their pay service. If you just want to route people to the entrance use .loc, but if you want to give people routes to take than like Monkeyevil said .gpx is the way to go.

I can't seem to be able to get my Delorme software to read a .gpx file. and my GPS utility program won't write to a .gpl file from a .gpx file.

There is a program called POIConverter that will convert between formats. I used it to get some Streets&Trips files into DeLorme. It was shareware.

If the forum would allow those extensions, hosting wouldn't even be needed. I have some tracks and some waypoints that I will upload from the Vanderbilt area (just north of Gaylord), the file is 25kb in size, less then most of the photos posted here. Is there a way to allow the forum to receive these?

Just from previous posts.... it seems the most popular are:

*.loc
*.MPS
*.gdb
*.gpx
*.gpl
*.loc

If someone needs a different extension added, just have them tack onto this post....

this should really be a sticky....

Just a thought...

Google Earth (free) uses .kml & .kmz files to create & save tracks. Google earth also accepts .gpx files. If someone were to create a track using google earth (.kmz or .kml) and upload it to a "please convert this" thread, or send it via PM...anyone with the correct software (myself included) could convert it to a .gpx file and resubmit it here for everyone to use.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must go fix my post to conform to the first post of this thread.
