Default Project Completed

Just finished my tire carrier today, after 4 weekends of labor. This goes with the bumper that I already made last year. I thik it turned out OK, I have yet to try it out on the road. Painted w/ Rustoleum Hammered black paint, same as on my wheels and front bumper. Enjoy

Looks nice, that's a great latch and the the way you mounted it will work well to lock it into the corner for even less rattles.

Out of curiosity, why did you have it open the opposite direction from the tailgate?

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I wanted this to come in at a 45 so it would hold down and forward, even though the mount on the bumper that the arm rests on is adjustable (bolted on) for height. I could have just come forward and made it much easier on myself. The Destaco I used has a safety catch on it and is rated for 700 lbs or so, I thought that would be enough. I also countersunk 2 holes next to the spindle to help lock it into position in the case I ever forgot to engage the clamp or it came undone while on the road.

Driver side swing... The reason behind this is I already made a bumper with a spindle on the pass side and I ended up getting this too far inward and ended up I could not open the door! Also, the height of the spindle cause me problems hitting the door in any position with the dust cap on so I ended up moving it to a location where I know the door would not hit it.

I've got the same latch and mines held up to a ton of abuse and has never come undone, I think you'll be happy with it. Good reasoning behind the swing. My gate hit my dust cap too, but just barely so I was able to beat it out of the way with little effort.

Yeah, departure angle does suck, and I wanted to make it big (wide) enough to make the toolbox useful. Oh well, I guess I needed larger tires anyways to get the angle back to being useful.

The other thing I would have done differently is used 3/8" steel and some 1/2" instead of 1/2" and 3/4". The mofo is really heavy. At least I can remove it and put it on another jeep if I get rearended by a semi.
