Default Ford Trans

When replacing a transmission (4R70W) in a 1998 F-150, does the new trans have to come out of ONLY a 1998, due to changes in other years, making them not bolt-up?

They will bolt up 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8, but there are different electronics in them that will make them shift funny or not at all. I would say stick to original style.

the expert says anything 97-03 will work, just make sure the donor has the same motor as your truck. he's on the ford tech hotline in the trans department. sorry bout the wait.

So if the donor has a 5.4, the trans WILL NOT work in a 4.6? Just making sure
