Default YJ titles without the actual YJ. What to do?

I have two YJ titles, and two dash plates with matching vins. Nothing more, nothing less. I just found them, I forgot I had them.

Is it legal to put these on another build, or are they basically just garbage?

Am I supposed to contact the SOS and tell them they are scrap?

I've seen boxes of old titles at swap meets behind guys chairs and under tables. The law might state that you have to claim when they are scrap but how can they enforce that? I could claim that I have both trucks rotting away behind my cabin up north.

I would keep them if you build a tube buggy or something they could come in handy.

My 79 F150 morphed into a 76 over the past couple years. ) If the man would start ask questions about motor and frame/axle id's I'd say my cab rotted away (it did) and I replaced it with one from North Carolina (which I did but I also used the whole body and frame from the 76. Didn't get a title therefore it's still a 79 don't tell teh cops plz.

Anyone have a 53 CJ3A title? Kaiser42 can't find his for mine :miff: :chiefwoohaw: :tonka:

I've sold them before to CJs.

Technically, I *think* its illegal to swap them, I believe. Well, techincally any time one of us removes a truck body and later reinstalls it, you are supposed to get an assembled title, and how many do that?

They probably aren't worth enough to worry about selling.

But my CJ3a *IS* going up for sale pretty soon. We decided a 1st gen 4 runner will be a better family rig.

You cannot legally put them on a tube buggy either, if you run it on the street, supposedly it could be confiscated/impounded on the spot for the VIN swapping. My buddy went through this on a sand rail, after a bunch of legal crap later, both his rails have assembled titles.

If your data plates are still mounted on your 3A is is INCREDIBLY easy to get the title for it through SOS. It only cost $25, I did it for my 2A.

Do you just provide the VIN and they run to see if it was stolen and hand you over a title? Bill of sale or the guy that you bought it from have to be present?

I got the paperwork from SOS, called the police, he came and ran the VIN and made sure it was not stolen, mine had an outdated plate on it from a long time ago, he ran that too. Both were no longer in the system because it hadn't been registered or titled in so long.

I wrote on a the sheet how I obtained the jeep and where I got it from. I signed it and then SOS ran the paperwork through. A temp title was issued immediately, they did their title search and a new title appeared in the mail 2 weeks later.

I actually thought about doing the whole process again because the officer wrote the Vin down wrong... my title is actually 3 digits off from the real serial #. That way I can have the correct title. I could then in theory get repro plates to match the other title.

honestly i think if you do it being honest and not trying to screw anyone i dont think anyone is going to care.

if you were to say... build a jeep from the ground up from pieces, those might come in handy.

I have 3 vin tags for Javelins. one on the car I have now and two from the cars I parted out. I think I might just keep them behind the table with me at swap meets....

You can not take it upon yourself to reassign a vin that was assigned to a different vehicle. This is a Felony, you would be considered running an illegal chop shop. Go through the process and get it done legally it is not that hard or expensive.

Actually it can be quite difficult, and to my knowledge a vehicle with an assembled title will be more expensive to insure*.

*Though I do not know that first hand

The expense is the processing fee, which i believe is around 25 dollars, then you have the vehicle inspected. As long as you meet all the safety requirements you will not have that hard of a time. Although I do not know of anyone that passed first time through. As for insurance you insure the vehicle as a recreational vehicle. That way you don't get hit with high insurance rates.
