Don't forget about Lowes and Home Depot. Remember forest city, Churches lumber, and various mom and pop hardware stores?

Ooooh, did I strike a nerve? I will have you know I am not "you people down south" as I was born and raised in Michigan, I like the outdoors and all the things that come with it. I also like Wal-Mart. Additionally, I own property there still.

Hell look at big Rapids my uncle owned a small lumber yard.. was great place contractors came to him for personal service.. then the popped in a big named lumber place and his buisness was cut in half but a lot stayed due to service.. he retired sold the buisness and moved. Now Lowes and menards but that other lumber yard out of buisness and i'd imagine if my uncle were still there he'd be going belly up.. his old lumber yard is now a recycling center

Im sorry but i try to buy as much american things as possible. My family has owned a grocery store for aslong as i can rember and i know how much busniess they lose because of a walmart that is about 25 miles away.

That is a valid point and one that is being debated in many circles right now. There are several proposals for amendments to the process.

How is what Wal-Mart is doing in the Soo old news? And you missed the point. The point was not the wetland mitigation process. That happens all the time. The point was that there are cities that are not cowering to Wal-Mart's power. When Wal-Mart went into Big Rapids, they did none of this....except the wetland mitigation....and the deal included them not paying property taxes for 30 years.

:stan3: Forrest City sucked anyway. And that was no small business. There were tons of those things around. They just couldn't do business as well as Home Depot. They didn't close one at a time....they were all gone almost overnight.

Anyone remember Farm and Fleet? Same deal.

Are you talking about Big L? I hope not. That was the biggest piece of shit place in the world. I would drive to Grand Rapids for lumber before I went to them. Product was crap, service was OK...but if you weren't a contractor they hardly even gave you the time of day. And if you went in to buy a handful of nails...forgetaboutit...you can but the bucket of 10 gazillion nails but not a small bag of finish nails.

I was short about 3 rolls of roofing nails for the gun....could I buy 3 rolls there? No, I had to buy a box of 12 rolls. I ended up buying 3 rolls from the rental place just north of them.

If you aren't talking about Big L...sorry for the rant. IF you are talking about the Cash and Carry or whatever it was called on the other side of the bridge...they they were even worse than Big L.

The point of the post was not to debate if Wal-Mart was the devil or not...the point was that there are cities that are not cowering to Wal-Mart's power and are demanding more than just jobs in return for them being allowed in.

Man, if we get a Home Depot here....
