I'd second the motion for the V45 or V65. I have owned 2 Yamaha Maxims (a 550 and a 750)...they were both very reliable and excellent bikes. I have a friend who has a V-Star and loves it but it has been in the shop a lot for mechanical problems. My friend that I work with used to have a Honda Shadow Spirit and loved it...super reliable. He traded up to a Harley Electra-Glide because he got his wife interested in being a passenger. He said if it was just him he'd have kept the Shadow. For a daily driver it would be great and reliable and fairly inexpensive to maintain. The Vulcans have always gotten great reviews in the magazines I have read. Look around and take heed of what other bike owners have to say...read thru Cycle World and such. The buyers guides are okay.

P.S. I love my Victory and made it loud...love that sound! But it costs me $55 to do an oil change on it (myself...more if a shop were to do it).

I would look for an old Maxim... but I think it would be bad juju... my dad was hit head on by a fullsize Chevy riding one -- the truck pulled into his lane. He has a steel pelvis (all plated together) and hip now, he always tells me ho wmuch he loved that bike.

The Victory oil change kits are a joke... I use Shell Rotella Synthetic and PureOne filters and it costs me around $27 an oil change. The Rotella keeps the bike cooler as well.

I can get you on a used Victory for around $7000.

I have a dealer around the corner from me and they are real nice bikes. For that price I would check it out before buying a Honda.

I've got faith you can handle your own on a bike Jake, but for a first time bike I'd steer clear of the honda V65's. Whether it be the Magna or the Sabre, that motor gets it, and you already stated you dont want to get into trouble.. I like old bikes. Hondas to be exact, so you dont want to know what I think you should get... SOHC/4 all the way...

I get 45+ mpg on my 94 Honda Magna and I don't baby it. They're good bikes and you can pick them up used in good shape for around 3k.

My trouble with the faster bikes (IE sport bikes was I was always riding 125+ whenever I hit a straightway...) I am smarter now just don't need that extra temptation.

I am going to look at a 2005 Shadow 750 IIRC tomorrow, they are asking $4900, I will see if they will take my Caprice on trade in too, it's sitting on a car lot and has been there awhile, so I hope they want to deal. :tonka:
