Default Anyone know of a good mountain bike for $400 or less???

I cancelled my order for the farkin' Jeep bike, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good bike.

I'd probably be using it for street stuff, but I also plan on hitting the Fort Custer offroad biking trails quite a bit.

Thanks!

-Jim

Check out Trek, I bought a trek in 2003 and have done nothing but beat the shit out of it and have nearly zero problems.

Wow!

Those are nice!

A little out of my price range though...

Yep, we bought my wife a trek a few years ago for under $400. It was still a nice, light bike, but didn't have all the fancy components of the more expensive ones.

We got ours from D&D bicycle.

Here is what I bought a few years back for 450. Genesis geometry rocks! You can read about it on the site. Gary Fisher Tassajara

http://www.fisherbikes.com/bikes/bik...bike=Tassajara

Dont be fooled by the MSRP - they go for way less than that.

^What he said. Most bikes I can think of sell for less than MSRP just like cars do. And most quality makers have an entry level bike under $400. So pick a brand you like or are interested in, and go to the store to see how it feels.

I guess I just need to stop looking at the trek website!

Is there any place online that has them that cheap, or does anyone know a dealer off hand that carries them (near either Flint or Kzoo)?

Thanks again everyone!

You can get a very good bike for under $400. Front suspension and decent components won't be a problem in your price range, and you'll have a bike that will last a long time.

I've always bought from a bike shop. They set them up and tune them correctly , something chain stores don't usually do.

Don't go for a full suspension. You can buy a crap full suspension bike for 400 or a decent hard tail, front suspension bike. Go to any independent bike shop. Giant, Trek, Raleigh, etc. are all good brands. The box stores carry decent bikes now, but if you don't know what your looking at I wouldn't recommend them. Most independent bike shops will size you properly, set the bike up right, and include a 1 month tune up (which they need after they get broken in).

Whats wrong with full suspension, I LOVE mine. If I come to hill climb I just adjust the shock a little if I have to to stiffen it. For all around trail riding nothing beats it. The used Specialized was going for around 400 when i bought mine, though I got a much better deal from a buddy :tonka:

I had a HEAVY Motiv Full Suspension and upgraded to a used Specialized FSR. I will never go back to a cheap bike on weight alone. The Motiv held its own at Holdridge though....

Dealer locator http://locator.trekbikes.com/?lan=en&country=US

You can probably pick up a previous year trek 4500 for around $400

For 400 bucks, you just don't get much bike in a full suspension. They need to cut corners somewhere to come in at that price. Either the rear pivot/ shock is crap or it will have a really cheap component group.

Granted, I haven't worked at the bike shop in about 3 years, they may have made some changes in quality vs price. Back then decent full suspensions were well over 400. You can pick up some good used stuff though. My favorite was a Specialized Rockhopper hardtail that I paid 100 for..

By used. $400 is a nice used bike.

I like the Schwinn Moab III's in that price range.

I'm sporting a Raleigh M80 these days. Pre-disc brakes, last of the made in the USA frames.

Save even more $$$ and buy a early- to mid-'90s fully rigid Cro-Mo MTB. You should be able to find one for $100-200. A high-volume, low pressure front tire (2.3"+) will give you a little cush. Go old school, baby, yeah!

Craig

P.S. - BTW, all of my bikes (with the exception of my winter single speed Cannondale) are fully rigid...I wasn't kidding around about this option.
