Talking I love when this happens

I get a call today from a large contract i have . There not happy , they want a cut in cost on towing . They want me to cut 25 bucks an hour off my big truck .

I talk to them about the cost of operation and to make a long story short my towing cost went down 25 bucks an hour . How ever my recovery rate for this company went up 50 bucks an hour . Storage charges were low according to them so they went up 10 bucks a day . These increase's were at there suggestion mind you but the tow cost had to go down .

Heres a prime example , This billing was faxed to them today which started this whole thing . Locate and bring in a 2005 Ken Worth . cost 437.00 add storage of 300 = $737.00

Now to make them happy i cut towing cost by 25 bucks an hour , new rate for the same job 375 add in the new storage rate and storage is now 420 = $795.00

There cost has went up and so has my profit margin . The " smart " corporate folks are happy as hell becuase they got me to lower my " towing " cost .

This is a big contract , i cover an area from Saginaw to Macinaw so i had to " give a little " . Glad were all happy about this

I suspect that someone in the food chain noticed your towing rate was out of line with someone else's. Because in many large organizations there is pressure to "not stand out" (i.e. "exception management").

It's more important that your towing rate not be out of line with the benchmark than it is that they manage the total spend.

I love this kind of thinking - it's what keeps people like me gainfully employed. The boss eventually notices that spending is up and can't figure out why. We come in, apply a little common sense, and bam! - another success for Lean Sigma!

I love it when companies demand that suppliers or servicers lower their costs. I'd tell em to shove it myself, but the sneaky accounting method works too.
