Default Glowing headers

My friend has a 454 in a CJ. We got it started last nite (after 7 to 10 years of setting) and once it started getting dark you could see the headers getting red. What are some reasons for this? My wife's 68 roadrunner did the same thing, Found out the builder didn't line up the dots on the cam gears. Any other ideas? Thanks

Having your timing way off can do that too.

red headers means retarded timming, even if your on the marks try bumping the timming ahead 2* at a time or until you hear spark knock under acceleration. if you run like that for to long it will start to errode material off the headers or manifolds

I like the Trick Headers idea! He's checking plugs, Timing, and carb. I might be back with more. It seems to run very good at this time. The headers are shorty style. He riged an old exhaust system to it so there would be less noise, Maybe pluged exhaust? Thanks Guys

I have seen them glow from timing either being to far advanced or retarded. I have never seen a set glow to being too rich (not that it isn't true) But I have seen them glow due to being very lean, or from a severe vacuum leak.

Timing or too lean. The richer it is the cooler it runs.
