does anyone know what the law says on break away box? i have a 20 foot trailer...is it required???

I BELIEVE it is not required on any trailer in Michigan, I could be wrong. Now i am courious. Nice Jeep by the way.

thanks your jeep looks nice as well!!! well i let a friend of mine use my trailer and he call me today and said he got pulled over and they impounded my trailer for no break away box...he is haulin two zero turn mowers on it...im soooooo pissed!

i talked to a guy at stams equipment..they sell trailers..he said he thought any trailer over 10 ft must have one

I don't believe there is a requirement. I've reviewed the vehicle code which describes all of the required safety chains and brake requirements, and it is not discussed anywhere.

That said, I have one on my trailer.

I believe that if a trailer requires brakes, it also requires a break away mechanism. But I can't remember if I ever saw it in writing.

I've never seen it in writing.

When i worked at the hitch though alot of landscapers came in bitching about getting pulled over for the same thing. I always operated under the assumption you needed one if you have brakes on the trailer.

I know this is old ... but ... if your trailer is rated to carry 2000 lbs it has to have a break away box.
