GLFWDA, my personal view of the changes
I was recently asked to explain some of the changes GLFWDA has undergone to position the organization as Michigan's 4x4 access advocate.
Here's what I came up with "off the top of my head" :
1) New Bylaws - Direct the Organization to defend and advance Michigan trail riding opportunities.
2) New Membership Structure - Individual membership and voting rights, no longer Club-based/ controlled.
3) New Land Use Committee - To organize, prioritize, and take action on the various issues facing Michigan's 4x4 community. Formed only 6 months ago, the GLFWDA LUC has already begun the expansion of GLFWDA's efforts to include the National Forests and County Road Commissions, in addition to their involvement with the DNR. Participating in 25% Trails Expansion Project with MDNR and MMRC, assisting with the formation of Michigan's first NFS 4x4 Route, and a LONG list of other new opportunities that simply didn't exist 2-3 years ago.
4) New Board Of Directors - ALL newer members who are extremely interested in making GLFWDA the strong Association Michigan needs to truly become a political force for the improvement of wheeling opportunities in our State.
5) A New Voice - GLFWDA's Land Use Representatives are working to collaborate with Decision Makers in all jurisdictions to achieve user satisfaction in the system.
6) GLFWDA's ORV Route Maintenance has been opened up for Member adoption. This is a great way for members/ Clubs to make a little money while improving the system for all users.
We may not be fulfilling everyone's desires in a state Association yet, but it's easier to change an organization into what you want it to be if you're on the inside making it happen, rather than outside waiting for it to happen. Everyone's vote counts now, but you have to join to have a vote. The more like-minded people involved, the faster things will happen.
I heard a saying a while ago that seems pertinent:
"The world is run by those who show up."
If you want to see something changed, you either have to show up, or at least support those who do so for you.
Think of it as a $35 dollar donation for Michigan's trails - AND you get FREE membership in the United Four Wheel Drive Associations, FREE membership in GLFWDA, 4 FREE issues of "The Boondocker" - the GLFWDA Quarterly 'Newsletter' (Hell, the thing's so nice it's practically a magazine!), access to Event Insurance for Member Club's, Representation at DNR meetings, Representation on the MMRC (Michigan Motorized Recreation Council), etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah . . . (There's a whole list of member benefits)
OK, I'm starting to ramble.
If you're not going to join the fight, at least donate a membership fee to those fighting it on YOUR behalf!
If no one cares enough to get INVOLVED, we're as good as finished wheeling in this country. Private land is easier to close than public. Just ask Paragon, Lion's Back supporters, or the Kidds in the Mudd Extreme Park owners.
We MUST support the fight for PUBLIC TRAILS!
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem; if you realize it or not.
