Default A true friend and great guy has passed

As some of you know, Karl Saulitis (known here & other boards as NMEinc) has battled cancer for the last few years. His battle ended last night.

Details will be posted as soon as they become available. But next Saturday in the afternoon will be the memorial service, then afterward a bbq at Karl's house. Karl's wife Jennifer will need our help in sorting through all his 4x4 stuff. Dave Kerwin told her that all of that would be taken care by his offroad buds, and she is not to worry about it.

I have set up a special account for Karl, to help his wife and family with expenses related to his death. Please find a place in your heart to reach out to one of our own, he was a special kind of guy, and a true friend.

Please email donations to nmeinc@misfitoffroad.com through paypal, or if you wish you can contact Dave Kerwin for an address to mail donations directly. Donations will be forwarded to Karl's wife.

Funerals are not cheap, and the battle that Karl has endured should win him a special seat "up there", next to all the greatly inspirational fighters.

I was sad to hear about Karl's passing this afternoon when Dave called me. He's been on my family's prayer list for a long time. I will be at the services next weekend and told Dave I will help with anything needed. Karl was a great guy. I enjoyed wheelin with him as well as just hanging around the campfire in the evenings.

As I mentioned on Misfits, Karl was very well liked and the nice comments should be printed and taken to his wife....possibly read at his service.

I will be speaking at his memorial, so if anyone can't attend themselves, you can send me or someone else a note to share.

Wow. That really sucks. I met Karl over the winter and he impressed the hell out of me, a real fighter. He was a great guy and extremely nice to a GL noob.

I never met him, but it seems he touched a lot of people. I wish the family and friends the sincerest condolences. May they find the strength in these tough times.

x2. May they find the ability to rejoice in his memories to such a level, that it outweighs the pain of their loss.

i hope this doesn't offend anyone, but what about creating a memorial sticker for nmemic? the same thing was done on Pirate4x4 for another offroader that recently died. I think something like this would be great for his memory and at the same time help support his funeral costs.

First let me introduce myself… I am Erik Saulitis, Karl (NMEinc) Saulitis’s brother.

I wanted to post a reply to let all of you know how much we, Karl’s family, appreciate the love and support shown by all of you that frequent this forum.

I was going to register shortly after Karl passed to update everyone as to what had happened. When I came to the website I was amazed and truly touched by the memorial to Karl on the front page. I was very touched with the kind thoughts, words and prayers in the sticky thread about Karl. These have meant so much to me and I shared them with my Jennifer (Karl’s wife) and my parents.

I also wanted to express to you what you all and this forum meant for Karl.

As many of you know, Karl was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma about 3 years ago. He had received both chemotherapy and radiation therapy for the Hodgkin’s. He had also gone through both self (autologous) and non-self (allogenic) stem cell transplants. He had bounced back from each of those with relative ease. He was doing great, gradually come off of immunosuppressant therapy. However, recently Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) rose up and caused him to become ill.

If you think of someone who has received a kidney transplant, and their body, more accurately, their immune system, rejects the kidney, Karl’s situation was similar. Except in Karl’s case, he had received and immune system transplant (stem cells for bone marrow) and the new/donor’s immune system was rejecting Karl’s body in the form of GVHD.

He was hospitalized for treatment of GVHD, which started to look like it was working. He was even discharged home for a bit, until an office visit prompted his doctors to readmit him. Unfortunately, his GVHD had reared up again, this time in his liver. He again received treatment for GVHD and it was looking like he was heading for the clear. However, it turns out that the treatment merely slowed down the GVHD and once the course of treatment was complete his liver started going into failure. He was then started on yet more treatment for his GVHD, but the GVHD was advancing too quickly.

On Friday, May 25th Karl lost his fight against Hodgkin’s disease and Graft Versus Host Disease.

Karl was strong, fought hard and had a positive attitude through to the end about his condition. He actively spoke out on the various internet forums he frequented, urging all to not put off seeing their doctor for any medical condition, as well as promoting the National Marrow Donor Program (http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Registry/index.html) and encouraging others to join (involving a simple cheek swab).

He will be greatly missed.

On a more positive note, I can without reservation say that Greatlakes4x4.com was one of Karl’s favorite forums to frequent. It was a forum that helped him get through his condition and certainly kept him busy during his hospitalizations. We often asked him if we could get the television services turned on for him or bring in a radio with some CDs to entertain him in the hospital. Always the answer was that all he wanted was his internet connection in the room to be turned on so he could stay connected to his friends on the forum.

And friend on the forum he made indeed. Karl may not have gotten to meet all of you in person, but always relayed stories of who he spoke with, how people’s projects were going and how much he learned from everyone and was inspired by everyone through their experiences and projects. His friendships across the forum meant a lot to him. Additionally, those of you he did meet, when he finally was allowed by his doctors to go wheeling, he felt were great people to hang out with and truly enjoyed. He cherished the trail rides he was in and was looking forward to building “the Juggy” with new techniques he learned from his experience with his Toyota and from everyone’s projects and advice from the forum.

So, now that this has gotten to novel length, we, Karl’s family, wanted to thank all of you who contributed to the forum, because it kept Karl’s spirit high, kept him entertained and gave him something to look forward to.

We also wanted to thank the whole community for the truly gracious and generous support in our time of loss. Also, special thanks, to Zook94 and family for the amazing scrapbook highlighting Karl’s wheeling and DaveKerwin for letting the forum know what happened.

Once again, thanks to all of you, for your friendship, kindness, generosity and sympathies to Karl and our family. But, please, take heart knowing that Karl enjoyed all of you and that all of you helped Karl through his battle with Hodgkin’s through your contributions to the forum.

Sincerely, Erik and the entire Saulitis family.
