Default Neutral safety switch

Has any one ever replaced a neutral safety switch on a cherokee?
My sister in laws 1996 cherokee (automatic trans) will not start some ties. But if you shift it in and out gear it will start. So I am thinking that the neutral safety switch is going bad. I had heard some where that they had a problem with them.
Also I believe the switch is on top of the trans. Is this correct?

I've done it. It is on the right (passenger) side of the trans. There is a harness that is up on the right side of the engine near the firewall that goes to it. Removing it can a bitch; I had planned on cleaning/rebuilding mine, but ended up having to destroy it to get it off the shaft. They are $300 at the dealer

Basically there's one big nut that holds it on, with a tabbed washer under it. You bend the tabs down to unlock the nut, then pull it off the shaft. Mine had been on so long that it wasn't budging, and there isn't really and where to get leverage on it, as it sits just above the lip of the trans pan.

when it doesn't start, can you get the key out? Technically, if the park detect switch on the shifter is bad, you will NOT be able to ge the ket out of the ignition, but it will still start in N and P.

If you don't have any key issues, it is most likely the "rooster comb" on the trans, or a cable adjustment issue.

You can adjust the calbe easy enough, once you find the lock clip. They are usually on the ball stud on the trans rooster comb where the cable meets the trans. Put the shifter in N, unluck the cable lock (don't bump the trans into anohter gear), let the cable shift or settle, and re-lock it.
