so my ramchargers axleshaft isnt long enough...

i have discovered that the drivers side axleshaft that the PO installed is too short. he wanted to ditch the two-piece shaft (vac. disco.) for a one piece shaft. being a cheapass he didnt want to get an aftermarket shaft, so he got a spicer shaft from valley truck parts. he said they couldnt find one the right length, so they got the slightly short one (claims it engages 1/4" into the carrier). this puts the seal right in the middle of the splines, so it leaks, and when you turn the u-joint centers the shaft at the pivot point, it pulls the shaft out of the carrier all together. does anyone know of a one piece shaft that will work besides a custom chromoly one, as i am a cheapass as well. i dont know what spline it is. are the two-piece shafts strong? i have another truck with the two-piece set in it, but if it is really weak, i dont want to put it in. if i have to go aftermarket, who has the cheapest chromoly shafts? the ramcharger is a 87 i think.

i found an old blazer shaft that was the right one for mine, but had a hard time making the seal fit, wasn,t machined inside the housing, get a two piece and clamp the colar in place, then you can use the original seal.

it used to be common to just "whack" the shift shaft with a hammer so it bends a little, then pound it into the engaged position, and it would never dissengage, but i am wondering how strong the coupler is and or two piece shafts. the two piece outer is beefy as hell. i imagine the inner just necks down to regular 44 size, so is the coupler strong?
