Default check engine light 01 escape

3.0L auto 4wd
took it to autozone and it's some type of emissions code. dealer says cap was not installed properly recently. since then, i've filled up 4 times and even reset the computer only to have it turn back on an hour later.

also, i'm getting a small vibration which can get loud coming from the rear passenger wheel at around 40mph and at 67mph. at first i thought it could be a cv joint, but after lifting the rear and checking everything out, joints look and feel good. maybe possibly a wheel bearing?

Wheel bearing in the rear, and you have an EVAP system leak. Unless you find an independent repair shop that has an EVAP testing machine, you're stuck taking it to the dealer and paying them to find and repair the leak.

The "Evaporative Emissions" system has a leak. The fuel tank and vapor lines are in a sealed system so that they do not escape to the atmosphere. Either your fuel cap is not sealing properly or you've got a hole in a vapor line somewhere and the computer can tell that the system is leaking.

Is it 2WD or 4WD?

Keep in mind on this that anything that has to do with the EVAP system is an emmisions item, so it must be covered under warranty by ford until atleast 80k (almost positive it's either 80k miles or 100).....it's mandated by the feds. IIRC there's also a time frame - 5 years or something on that as well, but I'd assume a newer escape is within the time frame

actually it has approx. 140K on the odometer. would a new gas cap resolve this issue? is it usually the gas cap? if not, is there a way to check where the leak is?
yes, it's 4wd.

In that case, it's def. not covered under warranty. Some times an EVAP code is caused by a faulty gas cap, other times its something else.....really there is no way to tell without doing some test using a scan tool or evap system tester. However, a gas cap is typically cheap, so it may not hurt to try it before you spend money to have it repaired...

Do you remember what the code was?? or its description??

You said you've filled up four times, clear the code and it pops back up an hour later. It is more than likely not the cap, but like Chris said, pick up a venting gas cap for $4 and see if that causes it.

For your code to be coming on that quickly though I highly doubt it is the cap, but try the cheap stuff first.

BTW, did you ever get the specific code number?
